Honda told RC he couldnt have any of his championship bikes, but gave JMB his championship bike? Whats up with that? DMXS brought this up to Ricky, and asked why he was missing a honda on his wall of fame and he said Honda barely gave him a numberplate from his days there, let alone a bike........ So I wonder how JMB got to keep his? Just wondering

And JMB still has his?

Stanton also has his bikes. Same era as Bayle. Honda probably felt they were paying RC enough in cash dollars. I'm sure he's not all that butt hurt over it.

i believe its just a honda thing. I know that in road racing nicky hayden had to specifically write into his contract that he would get to keep one of his bikes (honda) if he won the moto gp championship. if it was not part of the contract honda would not have provided him a bike after winning.

Ricky didn't get to keep his bike because of the height qualification. Honda was unaware of the legally binding stipulation, that like carnival rides, you must be at least 4'3" to get on a full size dirt bike. RC, coming in at barely 4'1" apparently won the titles illegally. Not wanting this to get out, Honda now denies that RC ever rode for them, and there is no "championship" bike.

He could probably find a brand new one since there are so many of them left over.

This is funny.

RC's championship bike is probably a freestyle bike somewhere Smile

DUDE! RC's trophy room is F'ing SICK!!!! Smile

Jeez, you would think Honda would at least be kind enough to let RC have at least 1 of the perfect season bikes Dizzy

Before it was stolen, didnt MC have 1 of his championship bikes? It was the one from 93 I think with the blue Camel SX #1 plate.

Honda were always paranoid about the opposition seeing inside their factory bikes. In Europe every nut and bolt at HRC always had to be returned to Japan to go in the mangle; they didn't even trust Euro staff to do it !
I guess they didn't want anyone to see inside the US "production" bikes either ! ;-)

I'm surprised that riders at the height of their career have the foresight to want to keep a bike for future nostalgia.

It's perhaps obvious to us fans, but for the riders, (who at the time each no doubt thinks they're going to be the next GOAT and will win countless titles), I would have thought that all they would care about is writing as much cash into their contract as possible, rather than effectively trading $100k for an ornament that they can't wait to get off of in favour of next year's works bike, and which probably holds little sentimental value to them at that time.

I think it's cool if they do get to keep them. I never kept any of my old bikes but wish I had.

The honda bosses did'nt want him and did not offer him a contract. Thats what he said in a RX interview a few years ago.

For those who don't want to dig through the entire article to find exactly where it talks about it, here it is:

"Interesting story that he told me on how he “acquired” the bike from Honda. Seems that he wanted to put it in his contract that he would get a bike but Honda wouldn’t do it because they had given another rider one and that rider promptly turned around and sold it. So Honda wasn’t into that at all. After he won the SX title, JMB asked for the bike and they said “If you win the 250 mx title, then you can have it” and of course, JMB went out and did that (aided greatly by the ’91 Hangtown national where he was the only front runner to score points) and then asked for the bike. Honda said “You have to win the 500’s also” which Bayle told me really pissed him off and motivated him to go out and sweep the titles.

Which we know he did but Honda still wouldn’t give him the bike! A furious manager at the time told him that it wasn’t cool of Honda to break these promises and informed JMB that the next day at 7AM, the race shop wouldn’t be locked and the bike will be in there and that maybe he should drop by for a visit. So that’s exactly what JMB did and he acquired the bike that had been promised to him a few times now. Honda was furious and Bayle said they docked him his last check. When I asked him how much it was, he said and I quote 'It was $20,000 or something like that but it was worth every bit to have this bike.' "
