I've been jacking around lately on Craigslist, looking at possibly picking up a 450 to play on...looking more at Honda than any other, and have noticed several '03-'07 models out there for fairly cheap, and some that are pretty nice and clean.

I know there are guys here that have a lot of knowledge...so, which year model Honda CRF450 had the most complete package to start on? Engine, suspension & handling? I don't mind spending a little more for a better foundation to work with. I'd love to have a 2010-2012...but I flat can't afford it.

Thanks.

Always heard 08 was a solid bike. I had an 05 and it was legit. Can't complain.

Had an 04 crf 250 that was rock solid, and an 05 cry 450 that was rock solid when they came out. Love hondas!

I have a 06 CRF that has been rock solid and a very good bike as most Honda's are.

One of my longtime riding buds is selling his
He is getting out of the sport once again and I will be bummed out to see her go. It has low hrs as we bought them new off the showroom as leftovers in 08. He has ridden his about 1/4 the amount of mine and raced it once.

Here is his ad that he wanted me to post:

>
> Yoshimura RS Exhaust
> MB1 Suspension (Recently serviced by MB1)
> Hot Cams 1 kit - Re-shimmed valves and new rings. Approximately (8) hours on engine
> Radiator guards
> Skid plate
> Hand guards
> After market pegs
> Extra parts (old suspension springs etc)
> $2500 OBO

I have an 05 and enjoy it, still running strong... Just keep up with the valves that's been my only problem... And that was more my fault than the bikes...

I think best value would be an '11 or '12 at $3500 (ish). Or get an '07 or '08 for $2000 or so.

'07 and '08 by far.

'08 had the steering stabilizer built in, other than that they were identical.

i had an '07, very durable and by far the best stock motor of any 450 i've ever ridden.

I have an 08 and love it.....Pulled 2 second place starts last weekend in the 45+ exp class at the World Vet Championships against a bunch of new scoots......and nobody was pulling me on the uphills.....Although the Athena big bore kit with a hot cam might've helped a bit!

I think the 07's were better. The only changes made for 08 were a clamp offset change, a steering stabilizer, and a detuned powerband. I think we can all agree that the honda steering damper is more of a gimmick than anything else.

Would go for an 07 and maybe throw some clamps on it. The 07's probably sell for a lot less than the 08s. Im sure everyone with an 08 thinks it belongs in a museum "last year of a carburueted Honda". BS

I had an '02, 04, and 05.

They were all really good with the 05 being best. The '02 needed triple clamps to turn, my neighbor bought that bike and rode it up until around 07 with no issues.

I had an 04 and 2 very different 05's ....I may be the only one on here to say this but I really liked my 04 bone stock it was an absolute rocketship! Suspension was legit too, it didnt corner that bad either.

The 05's one was heavily modded by Tokyo Mods and I HATED that bike, but it had that Diamond kit RG3 suspension on it whic was brilliant and worth $3500 I hated that bike so much i bought a bone stock 05 and put the suspension on it with the RG3 clamps and the WB exhaust and it was really good although I remember being much faster on the bone stock 04 and crashing a lot less.

I rode an 06 and it handled far better than the 05 for some reason....I guess they lowered the engine? It was a good bike too

Actually thats me riding my 04 in my avatar

This is pretty much what I was going to write, things run great stock and handle good. Basic maintenance and you should be good to go for a while after you get one.

"I rode an 06 and it handled far better than the 05 for some reason....I guess they lowered the engine? It was a good bike too"

What he said.....
The 06 motor has a really good hit to it.
In fact while Jody and the gang put on "one more tooth on the rear sprocket" before they unload the bike off the truck, I went the other way.

I went 1 tooth larger on the C/S sprocket to stretch the gearing out while the other guy is shifting.

Worked great for me, being an old guy.....

Didn't make sense to make a 450 more of a handful.
By the time this thread is done the opinion's will be from 04 to 2010....Smile

Interesting thread as I am looking at possibility of a CRF450 also.

So from what is on here, the carbed models are better option than the FI models? Was just looking at a 2010 CRF450, what are peoples thoughts on that? Would I be better looking at the carbed 07-08, which would be fine by me if they are a better bike, can save some $$$ on the initial outlay for a few mods to it.

I've had an 03, 05, 07, 08, and now an 11'. I've liked each one better than the previous. I did not like the 09' or 10'. If you can afford it, go with the 11' or 12'. If not, you can't go wrong with an 07 or 08, although I would choose the 08 over the 07.

I had an 04 and 07 and they were both good bikes. I think Honda figured the valves out in 07 and made them last longer. I now I have an 09 that has a lowering link to fix the suspension and I like it much better than the 04 and 07.

The OP said he would like a newer model but can't afford it and I can completely understand that.

That's one of the major things that has turned me off on this sport and trying to keep up with the Joneses.

I paid 4200 for my 06 off the showroom floor OTD.
To pay close to $10, 000 for a freaken DIRTBIKE is crazy unless you're loaded with dough.

I know it's been beaten to death but the Big 4 are killing the sport I was once so obsessed with.
I'm lucky to have raced in much simpler times when the avg Joe could afford it.

I like to versify my fun in life and have four different bikes that all do something different and all total for under 10k.

I did ride a modded 09 awhile back and did luv the way it cornered.

Just my 2 cents

08' also has a deal where the ignition is altered in 1st and 2nd to make it more manageable. Don't quote me on that but I'm pretty sure there's something to it....it's sort of like Kawi's "launch control" except it's always on when you are in the lower gears.

I had an 07 with off set clamps and an 09 and 11. The 11 was the best so far with the merge knuckle.

I would love for JT$ to chime in. I heard there was an 08' CRF450 at Chad's place for a number of years....after 08'. I am super curious how the 08' stacks up chassis-wise against the newer CRFs. I own an 08 and have considered upgrading to a used 09-12 but I'm not convinced any of them, even the 2012, is much better. I am not ready for air suspension so I haven't even considered the 13' and 14'.

Here's some stuff I dug up on MXA....

2010
New mapping, less bark, easier access to module
New compression release pin
Better fork seals, more low speed comp. damping
Softer shock valving

2011
Smaller throttle body for better low end and less flame out
New linkage rate - not really a change for the better
Bigger steering damper body
Longer muffler with smaller diameter

2012
Stiffer fork springs (Kayaba)
New linkage rate and chain roller
New footpegs

One comment that MXA made which really stuck out was this...
The 2008 Honda CRF450, with its 41mm Keihin FCR carb, produced more horsepower from 8000 rpm to 10,000 rpm than the 2009, 2010, 2011 or 2012 CRF450

I have an 05 and it is best bike yet for me and I had the 02. My buddy got a brand new 08 and it felt identical to my 05 except was fresh on power. So 05 to 08 seems like best bet.

Love my 06. Probably the last new bike I'll ever buy. I had the carb mod done and suspension revalved and a lighter spring out back for my weight. Best damn dirtbike I have ever ridden. Gonna keep it forever.

I loved my 2012. so much lighter and better handling than the older bikes. personally I like the more mellow motor on the newer bikes and think you can ride it harder because of that. my last bike before that was a 2005 450. great bike with no complaints and tons of hours with minimal stuff to keep it going. .not sure what my plans are now not real stoked about the new Hondas ether or the 1500 $ exhaust bs
olds cool

I'm not trying to hijack the thread but I've got a pretty decent '06 motor for sale that has around 70 hrs on it. I bought the bike from the original owner out of an ad in a local trader paper and it turned out he lives about two miles from me. I have an hour meter that came off of it that he swears he put on when the bike was new that's in a drawer with some parts that I can dig out and give you an exact number off of if interested. I bought the bike to do a CR500 conversion with, so I rode it a couple times and then tore it apart. My son has an '07 that we bought used and I had Chad Watts to build the motor and that thing rips. One difference between the '06 and '07 is the lower mounting tab for the right side number plate. It's not a big deal but I have found that there are a lot more options for plastic colors for the '07. I have contemplated buying an '07 subframe for my '06 chasis so we can switch plastic around and only have one year model to buy new stuff for.

just after selling my 07 , i ve put over 600 hrs on it , best bike i ever had , never gave me one bit of trouble , put in a piston and rings every 100hr s and fully rebuilt the engine once , just for mantanance , , had a go on a new 10 ,at the end of 09, but didnt like it so just kept the 07 , feel that honda are nt the built proof bike they once were either , there still good but have seen some problems with the 09 to 12 s , so had a go on all the bike lately , and must say the 12 honda was a better bike than the 07 handling wise ,the motor was very different to the 07 , but i liked it more to ,well my lap times did , it s so mellow compared to the 07 , but suited me more , then rode an rmz and fell in love , there is no comparsion between it and the 07 honda , the power is so much smoother and hit from down low with the fi ,and everyone know how great the suzukis turn , so getting a 12 in a couple of wks wish me luck , if i get half the going i got out of the crf 07 ill be happy ,

theres the proof , i wore a hole in the fame and the welds are wore smooth , the bike still runs perfect , got the frame welded , and i bet theres another 500 hr left in her yet Smile
