Just thought I’d share some shots of my 2020 TC 250 piston. She’s got 15 hours on it and has ran vp t2 her entire life, let go with absolutely zero warning. ....

That's not broken. it's just that new short skirt, low friction piston design they've been working ! Blink

Did you try turning it off then back on again?
Unplug it and plug it back in?

But holy crap I've never seen a piston blow its crown off.

Whoa. I can't even imagine how that happened. The top half of the piston had to break off pretty quickly and then got wedged up at TDC+, while the rod and the bottom half slammed it a few times. The piston crown looks pretty nice, all things considered.

What are some ideas of why this would happen? Don’t they use some aftermarket vortex or Wisceo piston? I remember Matthes saying something like that

Looks like a casting flaw to me that caused the piston to be brittle and break apart.

I was pitted beside a guy this summer on a husky 250 with a similar problem. The motor grenade it in a way I had never seen before and I had to take pictures of it. I was blown away by the damage that was done. When I took the picture down the barrel the piston was missing. Not kidding. Probably left out on the track somewhere

Didn't think anyone could top the OPs pics until motogoof showed up. Shot the piston out like a cannon.

I found a ring hanging off the throttle cable just above the carb. In the first picture you can actually see a ring hanging off the power valve assembly cover.

Yep seen that before on a few 19-20 smokers, most of them got it covered by KTM/Husky. Sucks either way.

Looks like it was running lean and got to hot and the piston let go.

I know it doesn't only happen to the Austrian bikes. I've owned KTM's and been happy.

I've seen a piston failure exactly like the OP's in a brand new '03 YZ250. The piston broke at the exact same place (lower ring land) and the piston crown was fully detached but in one piece like the OP's piston. I've never seen anything like it until now. Hope they cover it for you!
