It seems like every thread I read or question on social media where a newbie asks what he needs to race or asks for advice racing everyone freaks out about boots. Frankly for me the advice is a little ridiculous.

For a new guy going at new guy speed he is better off spending less than $200 on a pair of GX-1's or Tech 3's. No need to $600 on a pair of SG-12's or Tech 10's.

Once a guy starts pushing and getting more speed and hitting bigger jumps yeah, absolutely invest in better boots, personally I switch between SG-10's and 12's. A new guy is going to be more comfortable and feel the controls much better with a boot that isn't Supercross stiff. Read these forums and you start to think that if you buy a Suzuki and kick start it with Tech 3's you will need major ankle reconstruction.

Fox Comp-2's with 1 buckle a drawstring and 2 Velcro straps were good enough for RJ and the Beast From The East so I think that a set of Tech 3's will be good enough for Brandon's first race.
Poll

Does a newbie need pro level boots?

The problem with some boots is that they don't offer a great deal of protection. Sure, my previous Tech 7's were more comfortable, lighter and I could even feel the controls better than with my SG12's, BUT I want my boots to be protective. That's it. When I started riding I wore some Oneal entry level boots. Nothing wrong with them. Don't give a damn about looking cool, buy what meets your budget and riding level. But helmet-boots-knee braces are top priority for me.

My old fox comp 5 boots had good support but they were so uncomfortable to wear. Alpine star tech 5s were a big upgrade and tech 7s were even more comfortable

When I buy gear, I focus my money towards getting the best quality helmet and boots I can afford. In my mind, it’s hard to justify putting a price on preventing some kind of TBI or concussion, and broken feet/ankles. I don’t even hit that many jumps because I’m primarily an off road guy, but I’ve took some diggers just the same, and actually just today caught my foot on a huge rock that I felt actually bent my boot around my peg. I wear SG12s, but I feel if I wore a lower quality boot, there’s a good chance I would have broken my foot today.

Knee braces are next in line. After that, whatever last-year line of pants/jersey/gloves is on sale is what I buy. I’ve been using the same neck brace for 6 years.

Just my opinion.

Slow guys crash just as hard as fast guys...just sayin'. Is a $600 boot required? No! But a good mid-level boot (Tech 7 or equivalent) Is a great investment in your safety.

The current gen Tech 10 is very protective, so much that some think it's too stiff.

Stiffer than SG12? I like my boots to be as supportive as possible and so far the sg12's seem to be very good in that regard.

Are high-end boots needed for newer riders? I'd say no.

Are high-end boots overrated in general? No fucking way; my SIDIs are singlehandedly the best piece of gear I've ever bought and will probably outlast me. Will never go back to cheap boots.

My Tech7’s have saved my ankle from getting twisted or hurt more times than I can count. I would probably have a broken ankle if it wasn’t for my Tech7’s.

Head and ankle protection are very important to me if you have to go work every day on your feet.

Had old entry level MSR boots and hurt my ankles pretty bad a couple times with them. I 100% know my Tech7’s have paid for themselves. Plus if my ankle is hurting when I walk or something, when I put my Tech7’s on, it’s like having new feet!

I think if you’re riding Motocross tracks, you should invest in a boot with ankle support

You may need a physics lesson.

A Tech 7 may be a great investment in your safety but I remember when the Tech 7 was the absolute high end boot when it was introduced.

As I said I ride in both SG-10's and SG-12's so I don't think they are over rated in general either. I'm talking in context of the newbie. Learn with some feel and lightness then add rigidity when needed.

Personally I probably wear my Sg-10's 2 to 1 over my SG-12's. The 12's are primarily saved for race day because they are so much stiffer than the 10's.

Only used sidi leather enduro boots which are not very comfortable! Purchased some pairs of Forma terrain Mx ...Super comfortable and really have a lot of protection and the ankle pivot works great !
Lots of room for knee guards...Italian quality
Soles have good traction not bad to walk in ..overall a Great Boot!!

I didn't read everything, but here's my input...

Not everyone feels comfortable in Nike's
Not everyone feels comfortable in Converse

You buy what fits you best, has a good quality and construction, and is most comfortable.

I broke my foot in some sidi and in sg12s. Even the sidi boots wore out the little changeable sole came off during a race at cycle Rance.

I have like a 10 yr old pair of thors that I really like.. around 2 hundy back then.... Best fitting, most supportive, longest lasting boots I've ever owned and I race vet ... The last high end boots I bought 2 yrs ago,a+star toucans for dual sporting, are already falling apart ...

I know it's hard now days, but try boots on.... Go with a set that feels good to u, the price point doesn't have to be enormous

I broke both ankles in a pair of SG1’s back when they first came out in 99 or 2000 I think. Was it the boots, or the fact that I cased a double hard? Idk but I think would have happened in any boot.

I agree with previously stated buy what fits good and feels comfortable, but spend as much as you’re comfortable spending. For me, I have never been cheap with helmets or boots...

Look what I did with a pair of tech 7s, would the outcome have been less severe with higher level boots? Who knows

So, I rode in new tech 10’s today for the first time. I’m coming from SG12’s. This might not be a common shared opinion, but I love the Tech 10’s a lot more than my SG12’s.

I understand they’re new, and still probably going to loosen up, but I love the stiffness and it allowed me to ride on the balls of my feet much better/safer feeling than the SG’s. I was really nervous after I put them on that they might be a little too stiff, but after 10 minutes, I was sold.

And the weight saving’s was so noticeable. I’m not expecting them to last anywhere near as long as my Gaerne’s, but the noticeably better feeling and protection they provide over my clapped out SG’s has me very stoked I gave these a try.

It’s nice to have a booty again too. The toe box felt way smaller as well.

Pictures are pretty hardcore but put it in some context. How long have you been riding? What were you doing? If you are an experienced guy that effed up jumping a 70 footer you are not who this thread is directed at. I'm talking about the new guy that lands on the top of a 40 foot table. In most cases he doesn't need the ultimate boots.

I made this thread because during this shutdown I'm seeing so many bikes in trucks and people riding and it makes me think how sometimes as people that are so crazy about this sport and that most of us are gear junkies we scare people away.

True, the wreck was literally a highsided and the bike smashed my foot, a very beginner move lol, I posted because I feel like if I was wearing a cheap pair of 100 dollar boots the damage would have been much worse

You don’t have to be launching fat jumps to totally break yourself off, most foot injuries happen from either running your own foot over, or smashing it in an awkward fall, that’s where high quality boots come into play

Acerbis xrocks are the best mid priced boot I’ve ever tried, and they are basically a Ross between sg10 and sg12

You are oversimplifying things a bit. You need to also differentiate between soft, "so comfortable" boots and boots with real midsole and shaft rigidity.

An entry price Gaerne GX-1 has more of both than the current most popular boot model in the world.

The trend in design is to make boots with bonded soles that are soft and comfy in the showroom. That clearly leads to sales, but it also leads to Lisfranc fractures.

Thanks,

BP

I almost went that route, but I wanted to cross the tech 10 off my list first. Xrocks will be next if these Astars disintegrate quickly.

Or just go back to the Tech 8 and call it a day.

Get the best boots you can afford period. Being a noob doesn’t matter, in fact you could make a case that high quality is even more important for a squid doing dumb shit, running over his own foot etc.

Having said that prices for helmets and boots seem too high. Guys don’t need to spend big bucks to hop up a 450, but gotta spend that money.

Tech 7, Tech 8, SG-10, anything along those lines. I personally would never recommend anything less than that unless not hardly jumping.

My thought on boots is the same as helmets, $10 helmet for a $10 head........
Beginners crash as much if not more the experts, top end gear is required in my opinion.

NO. It is a Google image of a Lisfranc fracture

This injury is easy to get wearing boots that have a lot of flex in the midsole, which, again, is the current trend in boot design (and wrong IMO).

It would be pretty hard to get it wearing GX-1s, because they have a welt sole and do not fold up in that area.
