Herlings vs Roczen, the very early years

2/21/2019 8:52am Edited Date/Time 2/22/2019 3:02am
As we all pretty much know, Jeffrey & Ken were big rivals when they first started racing GP’s together in 2010, with Ken coming out on top most of the time until he left after the 2011 season.

I’m not interested in now or in the future, I’m interested to know whether they were rivals in the 85cc class or even before that. Anstie used to beat Herlings quite a bit in the 85’s. Did Herlings & Roczen’s path cross much in them days?

Love to see results from when they was racing mini bikes.

I remember that i saw Roczen vs Tomac in 06 in Finland at the world 85cc championship race. Lupino won that day, Karro was on his way to win but his chain broke. Roczen was incredibly small (basically no seat foam at all) and holeshotted all the motos (finished 3rd, i think). Tomac took the pole position but had some issues in the races.

Herlings wasn't there, at least i didn't remember seeing that name.

Just doing this off memory but I think they only faced each other in the world and european championship, which was always just one round. IIRC Roczen never raced the Dutch nationals. Also Roczen already rode a 250 in 2007 I think, atleast he rode in the youngster cup in ADAC. Could be wrong though

I grow up racing against Herlings and Anstie in the 65 and 85cc class. Herlings and Anstie where always the biggest rivals and a step above the rest of the field. Back then Anstie was most of the time the best guy on the slowest bike. That kawi was never close to the Suzuki's Herlings was riding back then.

Roczen was always a class above those to guys. On 85 when they where on 65. When they both where on 85, Roczen got big wheels and Herlings/Anstie small wheels so they did not racing the GP 85 or EMX. When they moved up to the big wheels, Roczen moved up really early on a 250f on 13 year off age. So they have never really seen each other on the little bikes. If they did, Roczen would likely have won because he always was already a class up.

2008 Roczen did a few EMX250 races that year and Herlings dominated the 85cc class and won every title. 2009 Roczen moved up to the GPs and won a GP that year at 15 years, crazy! 2009 Herlings rode all EMX250 races. 2010 they really met each other on the track, Herlings won his 3th GP he entered also on 15 year off age!

Crazy kids with so much talent!

2010 Roczen finish 2nd behind Musquin. Herlings was in 3rd position but got a injury a few rounds the end.

2011 they both got a good fight for the title, Roczen won and went to the US.

Rest is History...

They never really met until 2010 at the GPs

quite allot. Getteman,Petrov,Graulus,Van Donick,Just Roberts on almost every weekend because they raced the Dutch Championship in those years.

On the 85cc Aleksandr Tonkov and Jason Clermont where also super fast kids. If im correct Clermont got the title over Herlings and those other boys in 2007 at the EMX 85.

Why did Donny quit? Was it due to injuries? I remember he was a surprise pick for the Dutch team at the 2011 MXON’s.

Money problems. He had the talent but limited fundings. He is a fitness trainer right now.

Here are some other video's of these guys back in the days

World championship in Heerde. Unbelievable battle between Herlings and Anstie but if I remember correctly, Anstie had bike problems that day

European Championship at Markelo. Anstie wasn't there.

Anyone remember these Next Generation MX video's? This one was awesome.

Back then, when Anstie showed up in the test track, Herlings backed her stuff and leaved

That was this race in 2006
Also a young Coldenhoff , Tomac , Lupino , Musquin , Clarke , Roczen, Karro , Wharton on 85cc.
Back then Lupino and Karro where to real deal here in Europe.
Cool to see many topguys who raced the 2018 MXDN out front that they raced eachother 12 years earlier
