“The Orange Flag Shall Be displayed to a lapped rider, warning that the top-three are coming through. You MUST pull to the side of the track until the top-three have passed. This flag shall only be displayed to lapped riders under circumstances where there is a battle involving the top three. Penalties for lappers not observing this policy and ignoring the flag, shall be disqualication.” And so, it was written. Burp.

Lappers ruined the last couple of lap battle between Marv and ET. Field is just so depleted this summer we have guys that haven’t ever been close to qualifying making it straight out of qualifying.

Honestly, if you get lapped before the half way mark, black flag em.

Paint ball rounds to the face will be sufficent

Part of the challenge of leading is getting to lapped traffic first, it’s all part of the race.

They need a 107% rule like f1 uses. If you arent within 107% of the fastest qualifier you dont make the show.

Can adjust that number some but thats the general idea. If you arent even remotely on pace you dont get to be on track. Safer for everyone

Some races may have 30-35 instead of 40. Id rather that then 10 dudes who are 30 seconds off the pace

Part of the problem is also some guys can haul ass for 10 minutes, so they make it in through practice. During the motos they go quite slow.

I did the math If you use the 107% which is what f1 uses only about the top 20-22 make it in each class.

Thats their fastest one lap in qualifying. And like you said many of them drop anchor quite badly in the motos.

Your looking at 20-30 seconds off the pace per lap for some of these guys. They dont even belong on the same track at that level.

Agreed. The final spots that qualified out of 450 qualifiers were over 10 seconds a lap slower in qualifying than the top 5. 11 seconds in the 250’s. So if they ran that pace they would be lapped by lap 12. Out of a 17-18 lap moto, I’m alright with that.

Legit there were guys 30-40 seconds off the pace in 450 qualifying. Those guys have no business at a pro national.

If we could get the top 30 entries for Loretta’s B class onto the gate at the next round we have a much deeper field

I think the point (at least my take) of the OP was that lappers allow more than one rider through. Several times yesterday, the lappers moved for the first bike in the pack, but pulled back into line and slowed momentum of the 2nd guy. Orange flag would indicate that there are multiple riders preparing to lap you

In the 450 class anyone above a 2:04 would have been excluded. That's like half the field... and people make fun of MXGP only having 20 guys. Huh

So now we want people to pull off the track to let riders by when they see an orange flag? Sounds really safe to me.

Do you honestly believe that Loretta's B class has anything on the guys out there filling out the back of the field? I can assure you they don't even come close except for the top few. The top pros eat, sleep, breathe, shit motocross. That's why there is such a gap. If the guy in 20th made a quarter as much as the guy in first, he'd be a lot closer and more able to dedicate their life to riding, training, etc. Everybody needs to quit their bitching about the lappers. That's just the way it is and reading these degrading comments about some of the best motocross riders in the world is pathetic. Ya'll are clueless.

Am i the only one who feels lappers add more intrigue to the race rather than take away from it? Anyone battling for the lead has to go around the same number of lappers if the want to win.

And while the op’s suggestion sounds ok in theory, the reality is it’s not that simple as the flags don’t always come out with enough advance notice so trying to make your way off the track might cause more issues as they’d be forced to cut across the track and possibly right in front of the leaders. Bettering safer imo just to have them hold their line. Lastly, the orange flags as described wouldn’t have even made it out yesterday since there were only two riders battling for the lead rather than 2.

Just my 2 cents.

“there’s a race, and you’re not in it”.

I don’t have a strong opinion either way, but the high speed differential is dangerous.
Like a 90 year old on a 4 lane in the passing lane doing half the speed limit.

Lapped, get the black flag of shame.

At 107% its a 20 rider gate, and i did say that number could be changed...thats just what f1 uses.

Only top 20 score points anyway kind of interesting the 107% worked out to the top 20-22 or so.

Didnt eli and marv lap to 10th place? No rule is gonna fix lappers. Lapped traffic is a part of the sport. Only thing that will make you guys happy is if eli and marv were the only people on the track...

I think your maths is off a bit lad... Baggett's pole time was 1.57.3 thats 117 seconds. 7% of 117 is 8.21 sec so a 2.05.51 is your time to go home

So 9 riders.

Yeah either way tweak it to 110% 111% but at some point there is some merit to excluding some riders based on that.

There still will be lappers. But some of the 25-40th place dudes get lapped several times and really are just rolling road blocks compared to the top guys. They lap into the top 10 regularly so obviously will never get rid of lappers and that isnt the point of the rule in f1 at all its just to get rid of the hazards out there who arent even close to the pace.

an 'elite' only comp,

its what is organically happening in the us, with 20 or so guys able to run a decent pace and get a pay packet.
