My buddy is putting a 01 cr250 ignition on his 01 Cr 500.. BTW 250 has power valves and 500 doesn’t.
So he says it will make it start easier by changing the timing.. that’s why he is doing it..
Soo I say it’s going to make it have 250 traits also correct? (More over rev and less bottom?) he says it’s not going to do anything but make it start easier..

3,2,1 end the argument for us vital!!

common mod, you are both right more or less. So hug it out.

You come to the right place. This could be settled in no more than 11 pages if you pose the correct arguments.

Having a cr500 that starts easy and is more tame sounds like a win win either way to me.

It’s too late to hug out! Hurtful things have been said on both sides??? someone has to be right..
I agree with easier to start sounds awesome but won’t it change the power traits??

revs a bit more/quicker and starts better. I didnt notice much of a power difference. Digital versus Analog.

My 500s started very easy [for a 500] its all in the carb tune and kick technique. Still takes a healthy kick to get it to roll over enough regardless of ignition and whatnot

My kx 500 starts way easier than his cr500. I told him that if ya can’t start it you can’t ride it

To start easier, just do the 84-85? 500 Trick. Put it in gear, roll it back and forth a couple times, put it in neutral and give it a leg breaking kick. It will fire up

You can change initial timing settings by moving the stator plate. All other timing advance is determined by the CDI unit.

The cr250 flywheel would help handling. It's all about reciprocating mass

Funny thing came to mind. Back in soviet era some our guys raced the 250 class with 500s. The only thing that visually separated the 250CZ from 500CZ was silencer. Right after the race was over they quicly changed the silencer, and everyting was fineSmile

If it helps ease starting, that will be useful. A lighter flywheel on a CR500 would seem to make them easier to stall. So easy starting will come in handy.

A close Ignition air gap helps too with starting.

Anyway, who won???
