So I just did the top end on my 17 ktm 350 sxf.this is my first time doing it i've built several cars back in the day.i've got it back together starts great but whenever it first starts it's smokes a good amount and then once it warms up it goes away I put a B piston in it and it was .001 mm out of Maximum spec? could that be the cause or do you think the new valve seals are leaking it was a moose racing gasket kit and I am very puzzled at what's going on thanks for the help let me also state I am no professional by any means I felt like I messed around with that piston getting it to go in the cylinder for a little over an hour should I have maybe put the piston in the cylinder using the tool first instead of doing it from the bottom I also put assembly lube around the cylinder wall. Thanks for the help

If you were struggling to get the piston in did damage the oil scraper rings? they are very fragile and can get damaged easy. How did the oil pattern look on the cylinder wall when you cycled the piston up and down before installing the head?

Did you stagger the openings of the piston rings?

The oil rings on those are particularly fiddly.

Did you fit genuine parts (I’ve had trouble with vertex in a 350..)

I now only fit genuine pistons in any KTM 4 stroke.

Yes i did stagger the end gaps.I didn't even think to cycle the piston up and down without the head on. If I damage the oil ring would it not smoke all that time?after it warms up it stop smoking as you can see in the video thats whats got me puzzled

Oh and I always fit the piston in the cylinder before putting the piston on the rod- it’s much easier than trying to get the rings...

Don't you struggle getting the wrist pin clip in with the cylinder in the way?

I'm with Lung Butter. I'd be scared that the flux capacitor wouldn't mate up with the oil journals on the thingamabump, and then the rohipnovator would seize against the pistonifier before the thing even warmed up.

Cant tell from the video, is it blue smoke like oil or a whiter smoke? Can you smell oil or is it a sweet smell like coolant ? Could be raw fuel also

Bummer, the other two can be a easy fix. hope it does not turn out to be a high dollar repair.

I could be wrong but it looks like the valve stem seals are leaking on the exhaust side

take it apart again and check the oil scraper - the valve guides are not leaking as the stems are dry and all the oil in the exhaust track is blown up from the combustion chamber. If you lift the head you will find all four valve pockets partly filled with oil. On austrian bikes it is the easy way to fit the piston to barrel and then onto the conrod. The piston pin clip has a hook on one end and is thus very easy to fit if you have the correct tool.

You know KTM use Vertex from the factory right, the OEM piston is Vertex?

Had one in a 350, installed properly, and no drama.
