Alright so pulling the trigger in the next couple weeks on a new bike. I’m up in the air right now on either a yz125 or ktm 150sx. Both brand new off the showroom floor. Now keep in mind here that I am getting a great deal on the yz at under msrp otd and the ktm 150 is over msrp out the door. Right now about roughly 1500 bucks separating the two. Is the ktm worth the extra 1500 bucks? Or am I going to be perfectly happy with the yz125.. any input welcome

Thanks

If the 150SX is say a few hundred over retail, it is now same/more than a YZ250 at MSRP. Looking at it that way no. However I have not ridden a new 150SX. Have you ridden one yourself? If you are set on those 2 options, you should try the 150 first before deciding. I think only you could determine if that extra 1500 bucks is worth it. Also, doesn't the 150 have issues being allowed in a lot of classes?(I remember reading something about this for some areas or Lorrettas?) If that even matters?

I got prices on 2018 yz125 and tc125. The difference was $500 So it was a no brainer to get the Austrian bike vs the yamaha

The Austrian bikes hold the extra money spent in re-sale, at least in my part of the country.

Go with the yz. Especially with the price difference

Whatever you do don't ask Tarz.

Both great bikes but there shouldn't be that much of a price difference. I'd personally go with the KTM.

Do you want a 2018 150 for 7k or a 2006 yz125 for 5500?

This thought crossed my mind. With my riding ability and with what I’m going to do with it, as long as it has two tires and fires up I’ll be happy.

With that in mind id still get the ktm or husky if it was me. The brakes, clutch, extra 5+hp, tool less airbox, etc are worth it to me. Also after a year the yz blends in with the other 06-2019 yz125s on cl for sale and wrecks its resale. After a year the ktm is still a newer gen bike worth something so the initial invesment is there when you sell it still.

The resale part makes sense. Although I am that guy browsing craigslist from time to time thinking how in the hell are you going to get 5k for a used ktm 2 stroke. But hey if they are getting it then more power to them

What is your intended use for the bike? Is this your only bike? Do you already race MX or another type of racing? If not, do you plan to race?

0 plans to race. It will be a mixture of track riding and trail riding. Haven’t owned a bike for a few years. Last bikes owned were 07,08 yz250fs and my last a 04 kx 125 I semi restored.

Do you want a 125 or a 150? If it’s just a small bore, buy the YZ and spend your left over monies hoping it up (which is less than the 150). Please note that if you would 150 your YZ125 it would be about $1,600.

No big bore kits for me. I’m 28 but have the mindset of a 50 year old. I’m just out to have fun which I’m pretty sure both bikes would provide

The 150 is a 144 big bore kit on what is otherwise a 125.

How tall are you and how much do you weigh? If you are on the heavier and taller side the 150 would be the better choice. If you are a smaller rider you would be just as happy on the yz imo.

5 6’ on a good day. About 150 lbs. thinking yz is way to go and spend the extra dollars on exhaust etc...

Spend the $1500 on a revalve. KTMs are over priced.

The statement about KTMs being overpriced may have been true several years ago, but it is most certainly not the case today. They are very good bikes, and the difference between a KTM/Husky and a Japanese bike is abundantly clear on many levels, especially after having owned many jap bikes, and now two Huskies. Just my opinion. I would go with the 150sx. Money not being an object, the only thing the YZ has over the KTM is a better fork (although not by a large margin), and maybe the price/availability of parts.

Then get a YZ just for the suspension alone. It hasnt changed much in over ten years and the KTM is not that much better for a current bike, the only thing better about the KTM is its a 150 and the YZ is a 125 . If Yamaha completely revamped the YZ it would take KTM another ten years to catch up.

Or wait for the 19 us range.
I am in exactly the same boat.
Desperately want to buy a small 2 stroke and tempted to go with the 125/150 ktm as I really don’t want to pay for a 18 YZ that is exactly the same as the last 10 years.
Hopefully Yamaha will bring a new 125 to the table that will be a very close to the ktm range.

The only reason I have not pulled the pin with ktm is that I am a little underwhelmed by the brand to be honest.
Kids have a 50sx mini and a 50sx and I am constantly pouring money into them, be the clutch, kickstart........ worst,of it I am really meticulous with them, and do all the basic maintenance after each ride and top ends done at dealers..

I always hear people saying that there is jetting issue with the ktm where as I never heard anything bad mechanically for the yz. I just want a bike that I can buy from the showroom, jump on it and play without having to worry about jetting or something else.

When is the 19 range schedule by any chance?

How much are you willing to pay for a hydraulic clutch and a few other goodies (bars..? I freaking love my hydraulic clutch.
