Let’s start from the beginning. About a month ago I had a gear tooth drain out of my 2015 Yz250. This has happened in the past (twice actually), and I’ve replaced 2nd and 3rd gears and a shift fork or two. However, this time is different.

Opened the cases and low and behold, everything is trashed. Cases are shot, crank, bearings, damn near all the gears and shift forks.

Keep in mind that I’ve already sunk money into this project over the Texas summer, which means new suspension, new bearings all around the chassis, and other miscellaneous parts.

As I see it, I have a couple options.

1. Buy a brand new 2019 complete engine off eBay for $3,500.

2. Buy a good friends 2007 Yz250 for $3,500 that was just completely rebuilt 5 hours ago. I’m talkin’ cases, crank, transmission, the whole nine. Then, combine parts the one bike.
2a. I already have an offer on the roller for $1,000.

3. Sell the bike as is for who knows how much and buy a FC350.
Poll

Where do I go from here?

Assuming you like the YZ250, I'd do the Frankenstein and then sell the extra parts to recoup some $$$.

Do the Frankenstein, keep the best parts of the two bikes, sell the rest on ebay or keep some stuff like wheels etc. for spares.

No way im putting 3500+into repairs. There are BARELY used yzs out there for 4k like under 20hrs. Id get a clean low hours yz if you wanted to stay yz/"rebuild".

Me id be parting out and going new. Probably Rmz450 or yz450 for reliability....but fc350 is good choice too!!

Depending if you really want to stay blue and ride a lot, the brand new engine at 3.5k is not over priced.

But if you prefer to keep it more on budget, the 07 is a bit better, and a spare bike/spare parts saves money on the long run, as well as saves riding time like now (you could ride now with the spare bike). Then someday you can also find a 1999-2007 engine for about 1k, or even better a 2015 for 1.5k (or the parts you need for 1 to 1.5k), and resell 1 bike for 3k something, or both for 7k and have quite enough for a new one if you want to, or for instance 2 low hours tc250 for 8 or 9k if you want to try something different.

I feel like you can find the cases on e-bay eventually
the crank can be rebuilt

3.5 k is way too much and that engine is super easy to work on

fix it and sell it for full price

Im fairly certain rebuilding the motor is cheaper than all of the options... the yz i did a couple years ago i think cost me MAYBE $1000 even with a cylinder replate.

For sure, but he also cannot ride immediately. And i am not sure 2017 cases are easily available, so it is probably better to create an alert and wait until the matching cases comes up. In the meantime, he can ride his buddy's bike on which he won't lose any money.

EDIT : i have just searched 2 minutes on ebay and he is still quite lucky.

There are some new 2019 cases here for $1100 :

A complete 2000 bottom engine here for $350-400:

Update. Bought the 07 last night and swapped my 15 forks and shock over. Unsurprising everything bolted up.

After, around 7pm I was browsing eBay for parts and came across a brand new complete 19 engine for auction with 0 bids, closing in an hour. I ended up entering a bid of $2000 and winning the damn thing!

Guess I’ll have 2 Yz250’s this race season :/

Maybe it's because they still produce them so there's more out there but anytime I hear about a transmission gear taking a shit it always seems to be a YZ 2 stroke.

It would probably cost close to 2k to rebuilt that YZ with all OEM parts (bearings, trans, cranks, etc...) So that complete motor is a decent deal!

Really a steal, and a good deal on the resell value. (after this season your 2017/2019 will still be worth probably 4.5 to 5k something) That is a lot of invest, but the value of the total will remain steady Smile (and you also have 1 extra cylinder, extra clutch, reeds, etc). Basically you have almost everything you need also for next 2 seasons Smile

The 2000 engine wont work. Swing arm pivot is a different size.
