Let’s start from the beginning. About a month ago I had a gear tooth drain out of my 2015 Yz250. This has happened in the past (twice actually), and I’ve replaced 2nd and 3rd gears and a shift fork or two. However, this time is different.
Opened the cases and low and behold, everything is trashed. Cases are shot, crank, bearings, damn near all the gears and shift forks.
Keep in mind that I’ve already sunk money into this project over the Texas summer, which means new suspension, new bearings all around the chassis, and other miscellaneous parts.
As I see it, I have a couple options.
1. Buy a brand new 2019 complete engine off eBay for $3,500.
2. Buy a good friends 2007 Yz250 for $3,500 that was just completely rebuilt 5 hours ago. I’m talkin’ cases, crank, transmission, the whole nine. Then, combine parts the one bike.
2a. I already have an offer on the roller for $1,000.
3. Sell the bike as is for who knows how much and buy a FC350.

Me id be parting out and going new. Probably Rmz450 or yz450 for reliability....but fc350 is good choice too!!
But if you prefer to keep it more on budget, the 07 is a bit better, and a spare bike/spare parts saves money on the long run, as well as saves riding time like now (you could ride now with the spare bike). Then someday you can also find a 1999-2007 engine for about 1k, or even better a 2015 for 1.5k (or the parts you need for 1 to 1.5k), and resell 1 bike for 3k something, or both for 7k and have quite enough for a new one if you want to, or for instance 2 low hours tc250 for 8 or 9k if you want to try something different.
the crank can be rebuilt
3.5 k is way too much and that engine is super easy to work on
fix it and sell it for full price
EDIT : i have just searched 2 minutes on ebay and he is still quite lucky.
There are some new 2019 cases here for $1100 :

A complete 2000 bottom engine here for $350-400:

After, around 7pm I was browsing eBay for parts and came across a brand new complete 19 engine for auction with 0 bids, closing in an hour. I ended up entering a bid of $2000 and winning the damn thing!
Guess I’ll have 2 Yz250’s this race season :/
