Looking at picking up a second bike fora little project/bike for buddies to ride. Options are a super clean 2012 yz125 looks close to brand new, 2001 cr250 looks Iike it’s taken care of for the most part, or an 07 rm250 which is also very clean. Here’s the catch though the Suzuki was rebuilt with a wiseco crank and I hear a lot of bad about them. Guy says it already has around 50 hours with the crank in it so it’s hard to say. Which would you choose and why?

The close to brand new yz sounds like the winner to me if it’s really that low hours.
The rm has 50+ hours on a rebuilt engine so it has what 200+ hours on the bike?

Yz 125. Still a fast/easy to ride bike. Ton of fun.
For 200€ of plastics+graphics+seat cover you can make it look sooo good.

Have a shot from other side? Does look low hours but the clutch cover typically really shows the truth.

Anybody have any experience with the rm? Really want to try one because of what I hear about the handling, bikes are all about the same price.

I had an 05 RM 250 and loved it. Hate that I sold it. Great handling and power. Could be a little finicky at speed, but the power was good from low end to top. I would not trust anything Wiseco and would do a full rebuild on the RM if it was me getting it.

Lots of experience and I’d avoid that one. Wait and find one with low hours if you want one.

For sure I will keep that in mind, that was my stipulation with the rm was I needed to get an oem crank

Any votes for the 01? I used to have a very clean one and regret selling it a lot, they are known to be one of the best bikes ever supposedly. I’m out west so 2 strokes sell for a lot.

Every man and his dog has a yz Grinning I’d personally go to RM if it’s in looked after condition:

For your intended use, I’d say the YZ.

If it were for me to ride, my order would be RM, YZ, CR. If I am buying a used two-stroke more than a year or two old (unless it’s owned by someone I know), I’m looking for overall decent shape but assuming a full top to bottom engine rebuild and offering price accordingly. Two reasons. First, I don’t trust anyone’s work but mine. Second, I wouldn’t be able to ride it with a clear head not knowing it was fresh (since I’d know nothing about the time it was drowned in a creek, run with no oil in the gas and a quickie rebuild done, etc).

As far as the Honda, I know most people get wet in the shorts over the 01 CR250R (particularly the motor), but I personally think it’s one of the more overrated bikes in recent years. The much-bashed 02-07 is faster once the engine gets some basic mods and the chassis and suspension are better.

Just my .02. Flame away, lol...

I'm a Honda guy so I would go that direction, but I had a friend that built a yz for a guy back in his home town and it was super trick. Seem to handle really well and overall power seemed good. I had a 06cr250 I just sold this year after going though the entire bike and it was awesome. So a plus one on the honda !

Cheers Vital village.

This was my thing I don’t want to be picky but my bike is a 2018 yz250x so I already have a bad to the bone YZ. I’ve had an 01 cr250 aswell as an 02 kx250 before this and I am curious how the yellow bike is but I am also facing the fact that I’ll be needing to do the top and bottom end preferably all oem parts. The crank for the 07 is over 600 bucks on Rocky Mountain so they’re a little pricey lol.

The YZ125. The other 2 are getting too old, probably have a lot more hours, need parts, and parts are getting hard to find for both of them. I had both the Honda and the YZ125. The Honda suspension is pretty bad without a bunch of work and the YZ suspension is some of the best ever.

I'd go RM or CR.

YZ125's are still available and a dime a dozen. The clean CR/RM however isn't still in production, isn't dime a dozen, and will be something that will probably retain some value down the road.

You said it's a project bike... and sometimes friend bike. Build a project bike that's cool and different (not the YZ)

Yz125 for me is the best bike ever. Of those 3, easy choice. Easy to maintain, plenty of aftermarket and parts support. Insane that even an 06 is still so good, even today. Suspension will be easy to dial in for you. The motor is really good, and can get more power, pretty easy. It's just a fun reliable bike.

That's only something you can weigh up i guess.

If you already have a yz250x i don't know why you would want a (older/worse) YZ.
And if your venturing into buying a bike that's that old, you'd have to expect to spend some money on it. If the rest of the bike is well looked after and doesn't need too much attention then rebuilding the motor is worth it.

For sure I will post up some close ups of the 07 once he send them to me.

For sure yamaha probably is the best imho, but mixing up brands could be fun, or not. Lol

I think the real question is. Do you really want a 125 or do you want a 250? Or do you have no preference and enjoy riding 125s?

If you like 125s then definitely just go with the YZ125, its the newest bike out of those 3 and the suspension is amazing on those yamahas too.

If you want a 250 and don’t mind spending a little to freshen it up then go with the RM and replace the crank and service the suspension. Don’t bother with the CR.

I had the 2004 RM250, and for what its worth, its a great bike, 2007 will be just as nice if you go that route. But make it fresh so that you can truly enjoy it if you go this route.

Believe it or not I’ve never even rode a 125 lol.

Yes, this would be my choice. I have all 3 versions of the 2005 and that bike is excellent. The shortest way around a track is usually the fastest.

Any way you can test ride one?

125s are fun, especially the YZs. But your going to have to be more precise with your shifting. As long as you are ok with staying on your toes and being precise in order to make the most use of the motor then your going to enjoy it.

However, if you also want something to take out in the hills as well, and not just the track, then my personal preference would be a 250.

Owning a 01 CR 250 I’ve encountered one big issue.OEM parts availability. Wreck the right radiator, good luck, it’s NLA. Power valve? Half the parts are NLA as well.
My bike is mostly a garage queen because of this.
A bike for your buddy’s, go with the YZ. Way easier locating parts.

RM, YZ, CR.

That's if the RM isn't a time bomb. That is a really good 250...

But then again, everyone should have a 125 at some point, they are a blast to ride...can't go wrong with a newer yz125

You never mentioned price tho, that makes a big difference... unless i missed that somewhere?
