So for reference I’m 16 5’10 and 165 pounds and rn I ride a 150sx I’m about to upgrade to a 350 or 450 ktm I do mostly woods riding but I go to the track as well it’s a healthy mix so I’m just wondering which would be better is the 450 really that much worse than the 350 I’ve ridden a 450 before but just in a straight road hauling ass so let me know what you think thanks

A 16 year old kid comes on here and asks a legitimate question because he obviously wants some help, and the only reply is a smart ass. Nice.

I'd see if you can go to a KTM demo day if there is one in your area. Since you are riding a 150 and only asked about KTM, I'm assuming you have a relationship with a KTM dealer? Maybe see if one of their riders has a 350 they'd let you ride.

If you're mostly a woods guy, I'd go 350, but you'll get different opinions from a lot of guys.

If possible try riding both, maybe borrow from a friend so you can decide based on your own first-hand experience. I'd look long-term next 5 years and what would I want to have when I'm 20. You being so young and coming from a 150 I'd rather go "underpowered" with the 350 as a safety precaution. Then you next bike could be a 450 or who knows maybe they are all electric then ):

There is nothing you can do on a 350 that you can't do on a 450, ask Carioli. Yeah sure current development isn't the same but you aren't planning to race the nats.

At the end whatever you decide, don't get a quad.

Love your mix between woods and tracks, it's what I used to do at your age. Now only trail riding, desert and such.

350 all day.
Not going to be much faster on a 450, probably not even at all but you’ll save so much energy on the 350 and be faster overall.
If it were me I’d be looking at a 300 2stroke.

Illegitimately named thread deserves an illegitimate reply.

Seriously what the fuck is up with the thread naming lately. If it’s not “riders-last-name”, it’s an unfinished question or a single word that doesn’t reflect the topic. You’re not charged by the word, I’d be willing to bet that “Help, 350 or 450?” Would get a few more clicks and a more serious response than just “help!!!!”

Thumbs down if you agree. Thanks

You know at 16 you are still growing, maturing etc. Unless you are an aspiring pro I’d be inclined to recommend staying on the 150 or going to a 250 2 or 4 stroke. The larger displacement 4 strokes are a lot of bike and can bite even an experienced rider really quick. With that said I would vote 350 over 450.

250xc or 300.

depends what type of trails you ride but I would stay away from a big 4 stroke if its anything technical. I ride a 250 2 stroke in woods, 450f comes out if I go to track.

if youre deadset on a 4 stroke Id personally say get a 250f or 350f. if you are funding this yourself without parental help, that may make argument for a 250 2 stroke even stronger.

I'm with jc- 250xc would be great for you.

See if the dealer would be willing to throw in a box of punctuation on the deal, too 😀.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone make a rev limiter, or can you use the manufacturers tuners to limit the revs of a 450. On reason I'm asking is that I could see a 350 being a tad low on low end torque in the woods, but on the other hand, a 450 would have the low end grunt to get through/over tight spots and with the rev limiter in place, you could essentially cut back on the high horsepower that'd be tougher to extract in the woods. I'd think that coming off a 150 SX and going to a 450, even a detuned motor would be more than plenty. You could simply torque it around and keep things in control. On the other hand, if your skill set is good enough, you could forget the detune and just keep the revs low in the meat of the torque. Oh heck. I'm probably just rambling here.

I’d get a 350 before a 450. Depending on how tight your trails are, a 450 can be a handful.

Definitely not a 450. I'm a 36 year old chubby guy and I don't even like the power of a 450 in the woods. Get a 350 or you could even get by with a 250.

Hopefully some mod comes along and does everyone a favor and just bans you and your shitty attitude.

Back to OP. Between the two if you do mostly woods than I'd say 350 all day long over a 450, especially if youre doing a lot of single track or real right stuff. Im not sure what your feelings on two strokes is but a 250 two stroke would be worth a look also. I ride a 350 because I mainly do motocross but if woods was my main riding choice I'd have a 250 smoker without a doubt.

Yea I ride a 2 strike now and I was also thinking about a 250 two stroke but I’m pretty sure I wanna hop on a 4 stroke, how is there bottom end torque on the 350?

Outside of the XC recommendations, which is what I would have advised if you asked that question, I would most certainly say 350 if you are only limiting your choices to those two. I had a 350, coming off of a 250 2 stroke and it was awesome.

Yea thanks that’s what I’ve been more leaning towards but like jt sad just bought a 300xc tpi so and I wanted a mx bike anyways so that’s what I was thinking was the 350, but how much low end torque do they actually have like is it enough for climbs and stuff like that

At your age and weight? A Husky FX250...or a 350 if ya feel you need the bigger engine.

Plenty of torque. Its not at the 450s level obviously but whats nice is IMO its no harder to control than a 250F because of how smooth it is. If you end up leaning the 450 route I highly recommend you try one in the woods first if you can, even if its not the brand youre looking for just to get a feel of what its like. About the only enduro riders here I see on 450s are the AA guys, and even then most of them are on 250s but our trails are extremely tight also.

Lastly if you really want to move to a four stroke dont sleep on todays 250F's. They are not lacking on power these days by any means.
