Hi guys. Well its bd time and my grandson will be 12 on 9/11. We have an old ratty gopro2 or 3 that is not in the best shape. He wants an Iphone 11 but that is NOT gonna happen. Well maybe it will but not now

I have not kept up with the Helmet cam junk in years so, what is the best one I can buy for say under $500?

Is Gopro still one of the best? I know Sony was making one at one point. Just because I said $500 doens't mean I won't spend less. lol example if a GoPro 3 is $300 and a 5 is $500 but the difference is minute then Ill just get the lesser. BTW I have no idea what number GoPro they are on now. I was just using those as an example.

So, what would you buy? Remember, he is only 12 and he will be using it. His electronics knowledge is probably better than mine. So please, nothing to complicated.

Thanks,
Gerald

Hot take but be careful with gopros esp when mounted to the top, side or chin of a helmet. In a crash they can dig into the ground and twist/break the rider's neck.

Its worth the risk for some but I'd be especially careful with a child.

I got the new GoPro Hero 8 for my hardcore adventure riding in the Colorado mountains - and the new stabilization is nothing short of incredible. You can pick one up for $299 right now, brand new. To me this is the best cam you can buy and definitely worth the money.

Click here to watch how good the Hypersmooth stabilization is. And this is an insanely rocky and bumpy road! Almost unwatchable on my old Hero 3. Once you get it set up you don't have to worry about it again.

I run a chest cam cuz I think it gives the best view.

Gopro's website has a $100 deal off right now, for $299, only one battery and a memory card are included. You can also buy the cam and a few accessories included for $350 on their site. Batteries last about an hour, so I have 4.

I buy accessories separately, you an find them on Amazon.

That mount looks good.

I have the GoPro 7 Black - as mentioned the stabilisation is sensational.

I think this mounting system is worth a look.

I have that one and ended up taking it off my helmet because the extra weight at the front was not good - my neck would hurt after the ride from holding it up. But keep in mind I wear my helmet for like 5 hours straight.

You don't even feel the extra weight if it is centered on top of the helmet, but I use the chest mount all the time now instead.
