I like the idea of it, but I think it was poorly executed. Most of the time they were too zoomed out.

I was going to start a thread on this. Too bad they can’t shoot every race like this. IMO, the aerial shot from the chopper gives the best view of what this sport is all about. It shows the variation of the terrain and the line choices in the turns in a way that can’t be matched from a camera on a scissor lift or on the ground. Reminded me of watching Carlsbad USGP on Wide World Of Sports 6 mos after the fact back in the day!

I liked it. Only negative was already brought up by Weege/GL.... you lose the elevation perspective.

TV doesn’t give that aspect much justice anyway... Screw-U being the perfect example.

I can’t imagine the cost of running that helicopter all day.

I thoroughly dug it, although as previously mentioned, she was often up too high, zoomed out. Hey, remember when they had that camera-on-wire dealio, at a few events ? That was badass....

But a drone no big deal.
Exactly if they could implement a drone that would be sweet! Drone footage from the tree line would be insane

Yes, major success imho.

Nice to see the lines and the sense of the speed from above.
Was cool to see the lines from up above...

A helicopter with camera stabilization, broadcast quality camera, pilot, permits and camera operator... don’t forget it’s live feed being sent wireless. Around $10,000 for a few hours, at least.

Drone with Red Camera + 2 operators wouldn’t be much less and I’m not sure of the live feed capabilities because of the weight. Another negitive of the drone is that it’s hard to use a zoom lens like they had and keep it ultra smooth.

Cool vantage point at times (start of the moto was cool) but at others I feel like the producer cuts away at bad times anyways.... another camera high in the sky is adding more difficulty.

Can’t believe we didn’t get a PIP of the battle in 250m2 instead we cut to Ferrandis rolling the finish. Fuck me.

It felt too far away for me. Perhaps that’s something that can be adjusted for the next time. Nice to see another perspective though. Also, gave a good view of the site and how it’s recovered from the nations

Oh and good on Lucas Oil for lending it. Their support of the sport in general is very much appreciated. Things like this go the extra mile.

Watch old Wide World of Sports, Superbikers to see it done sorta right.

Loved those races, Eddie Lawson vs the mxer’s. Never been an RJ fan, but that “kid” was badass at Superbikers.

its amazing that the parking and camping area is bigger than the track. I can remember when the track was bigger than the parking lot

What did everyone think about it?
The should use a drone at every round with a skilled operator

Loved it, though maybe a little zoomed out and used at the wrong times. But a great addition none the less and really offers a different perspective. Its great at a track like Red Bud with its long straight aways and back to back 180 turns (start straight and first couple cornrs, and the sand rollers leading towards Larocco's.)

Legit not sure if I prefer to watch the start and opening few corners from the traditional camera angles or from the chopper?

I loved it. When you can have the riders on screen for a longer period of time, without having to cut to multiple cameras, it really helps give the viewer a reference of the speed and amount of ground these guys are actually covering. Reminds me of the Isle of Man TT race footage. Plus you get to see a much better view of how rutted some parts of the track are from being higher up!

I agree with the drone idea! Cheaper than a helicopter and possibly better angles too!

even tape delay of 1 corner is better then the old days of waiting for the mail man to deliver cycle new on Wednesday or Thursday to find out who won the race on Sunday has anyone been there before

Does that $10k figure include fuel? If so that's way cheaper than I wouldve guessed.

I would have guess double or triple that, and then you have to think about transportation costs etc.

I liked that it gave us an idea of the distance between the different positions. Sometimes with the head-on shots, it looks like they're a lot closer than they actually are.

The drone idea is good, but like Joe said, do they have the capability to broadcast an HD quality live shot (or even a live shot at all)?

But you would have to add up the cost of multiple uses of the heli vs a camera/quadcopter, no? A RED 4K camera outfitted with goodies is like $15,000 I think? So it would pay for itself quickly but yeah, you're not going to get those massive zooms. Luckily you can get pretty up close with a quadcopter/drone where you wouldn't need that massive zoom lens.

And yes Sully, RED cameras are capable of 4K live streaming.
