Heath Voss?

Picked up a couple bikes in a package deal. 1990 cr250 and a 2003 yz250f. Wanted the 1990 cr250 for a project and at $1100 for the pair I couldn't pass them up. Owner told me both bike had sat for 3 years but said both ran when parked. After I got them home I started looking them over good and the yz250f has Enzo sub tanks on the forks and few other items GYTR top clamp. But what caught my eye is the engraving on the fork caps and shock body. Both have VOSS 250f. I know in 2003 he was already on a yz450f and in the pictures of him I can find on the yz450f it has Enzo sub tanks. So I'm guessing maybe the yz250f was a practice bike? So anybody know what ever became of Heath Voss?

Heath's alive and well and living in Mico,TX which is just outside of San Antonio.

These days he does his flying in helicopters.

That yzf would be a perfect bike to restore and do a replica build and to look pretty and sit in your man cave 🤔

It’s hard to determine from your pictures but it looks like the front brake line is stock routing. I would think even a practice bike would forgo stock routing for the CR style at his level. I had a set of Enzo A kit forks in 2003 and I vaguely remember the lugs being replaced for CR style.

You'd especially think that someone who went through the trouble to install a braided steel line would get the shorter one. Strange.

Agreed, here’s a pic of Chad in 2002 and his line ran straight down. Someone definitely went to a lot of trouble to fake it back in the day if it isn’t legit though.

Random story. There was a local racer in my area that was named Keith Fox. Always thought they were saying “Heath Voss” over the intercom at certain races for years! Was like, what the hell is he doing at this local fairground race?

Actually ended up meeting and riding with Keith Fox years later. He’s a good dude. Grinning

Would it have to be a practice bike though? We see parts being sold online from other bikes all the time. Maybe the guy bought Voss`s suspension from a practice bike?

With Heath being on a 450 at the time (I believe he was on the factory team then) There's no reason why he'd practice on a YZ250F, I know DV used to ride a YZ125 sometimes but in the four stroke era this pretty much went away. I assume the owner bought the suspension from someone.

I know Heath was already on a 450 in 03. But in the picture of the shock body the engraving although hard to see in the pic is YZF250 - 03 VOSS . So hard to say were it came from or who owned it along the way.

For those new to the sport, Heath Voss was a true blue-collar, working man's rider. Public school, football, tough as nails, totally dedicated, and eventually a world sx champ. Hell of a nice guy, too!

Yup he was one of the first privateers to break off the island and become a factory rider for years.

When I returned to racing in 2003 after being away since 1989 I bought myself a shiney new 2003 CRF450 and rode a few weekends at Cycle Ranch outside San Antonio until I thought I was ready to gate up again. So, the time comes, I sign up in 40+ and head for the line. Sitting in the shade under the nice covered starting gate, I look to my left and there's Kent Howerton. To my right is Heath Voss. Welcome back!

They let Heath and Kent ride whatever class they wanted to at the time. Kent had a good deal to do with Heath's riding back then.

And no, I didn't see them again until the second moto.Laughing

First supercross I ever went to was in Atlanta and Heath let me sit on his bike to take a pic. I still appreciate him doing that, that was a cool moment for a kid that loved dirtbikes.
Thanks Heath!
