I’ve been watching Supercross for years but have never understood how they determine which heat an individual rider will race in. I know they do timed qualifying before the heat races but notice that the fastest guys race are divided,..not racing in the same heat. Can riders pick for themselves or is it decided which heat to race in?

They alternate the times. Fastest time is in second heat, second fastest is in first heat, third fastest is in second heat, fourth fastest is in first heat. And so on.........

^ What she said. To simplify it a bit, if a rider’s qualifying position is an even number they race Heat 1, if it’s an odd number they race Heat 2.

Thanks for posting this labbe001, I was curious as well. What about a rider that DNS in the Main (Baggett in Tampa)...would the next guy from the LCQ be able to line up ? I think Sandman asked that question but didn't get an answer.

Im pretty sure that once the night show starts they will not fill the spot, someone correct me if im wrong, but if a guy was to get hurt and unable to start his heat race the next fastest guy would take his spot, but once the heats start they dont replace anyone if there is a DNS.

No, if you don’t finish in a qualifying position your not eligible. There are no alternate.

There used to be alternates for the heat races waiting in the tunnel 2-4 of them every weekend. This is from 8-9 years ago

Yes, and they used to allow 1 or 2 provisionals per year to the top 10 in points. Meaning you could claim the last qualifying position, without riding at all.

I looked at the rulebook. Looks like they have a provision if it's a Triple Crown, but I didn't see anything for a Standard round. Qualifying procedure starts on pg. 30 of the 2020 AMA Rulebook.

Back before timed qualifying practice the heat race lineups were determined by the points standings. It was something like 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and so on went into the first heat race while 1st, 4th and 5th, etc went into heat 2.

It made it to where the top 2 riders in points never raced each other until the main event.
