Hi Everyone,

I am after a really good heart rate monitor for motocross, I have come down to 3 watches.

1. Garmin Forerunner 630 - http://www.clevertraining.com/garmin-forerunner-630-touchscreen-gps-run…
2. Garmin Forerunner 735xt - http://www.clevertraining.com/garmin-forerunner-735xt-gps-running-multi…
3. Garmin Fenix 3 HR - http://www.clevertraining.com/garmin-fenix-3-multisport-training-watch

I want to know which platform is best tailored to doing continuous laps and having a good look at the data (time, speed, HR, GPS and all the good stuff to look at afterwards and can look at all the important things for a mx racer

Thanks Guys!

Would a Fenix actually give lap times without hitting a button?

Garmin ForeRunner 610 (yes old model) is still best ones i have seen. Gives you laptimes By position that newer
models didnt do. (Not sure if this has came with updated softwares now)

You can still find it with so much less money that i dont see any reason get new ones other than looks.
Lap times, HR, Speed, Temp, Calories and other not important things you can watch By lap on clock or upload everything to garmin connect site and have your all riding data there including map.

If you want to cut place in handlebar foam you can go also Garmin Cycling models 500, 510 or something else
and you can watch laptimes or heart rate during riding. Forerunner clock has smaller font so its more difficult to see.

For what it's worth I use a Garmin Vivoactive. It was well worth the money imo. The GPS works pretty damn good. Was in the truck and looked at the mph and it was dead on. Its pretty cool to see an overlay on google maps with your laps, times, heart rate, speed, ect

I use the Forerunner 920XT for cycling (road and mountain) and running and I absolutely love it.

If you are solely looking for an on the bike training device, you can't beat the LitPro. Obviously a bit more expensive but the data acquisition reflects that, specifically HD GPS lap data. I used to use the Forerunner 310XT which was pretty solid, so I would imagine the newer ones are even better. It had the ability to mark a position so every time I came around, it would click a lap. It wasn't accurate down to hundredths but it would get you within a second.

I use a Garmin for my off the bike training (Vivoactive HR) but it doesn't have the ability to mark a lap position, it only does laps based on distance. It's the best multisport GPS watch I've used. I use it in the gym, on the road and mountain bike, and pool, along with my daily activity tracking. Only issue I've found is it isn't great at tracking spikes in heart rates if you are doing intervals or when my wrist was bent on the spin bike (it's a wrist based HR). I use a chest strap for those situations. I love that it connects with Strava and I don't have to bring my phone with me on bike rides.

Another option is the new GoPro with added data acquisition information...again expensive but depends on your budget

I used to use a combination of Garmin Connect and MX Buddy until I switched to LITPro. Garmin Connect just for exporting the GPS data and for checking my heart rate data. MX Buddy for all the motocross related stuff, like analyzing my laps, consistency, bike setups and so on.

Were you able download data from the Garmin app to the MXbuddy app? Trying the watch app combo to get into this on the cheap side of things, already had the watch. I was able to download the data on a PC and save it to Dropbox to then upload into the mxbuddy app. I was sort of hoping that I could get the data and control everything from my phone between motos.

When I exercise I use both my Garmin vivoactive HR and edge 230 with a chest HR strap.

The vivo provides the HR with your activity included into your daily activities. The edge gives a precise look at your activity.

In the edge you can tell it how long a lap is distance wise and it will track laps by distance using GPS. Your ability to do a lap in that distance is your responsibility. I don’t see why you couldn’t build a lap and upload it into an edge 25 or 510+ there by being more precise.

I have been looking at getting a watch to track hr but have been a bit turned off by reviews saying their not very accurate, especially during cycling and weightlifting. Have you guys found it accurate enough to train with?

Sorry I meant the optical hr sensor in the watch. But I think a set up like yours is the way to go

You need a chest strap. Optical is just to keep track of resting heart rates, stress levels etc.

Random post, but I was cleaning out old "lost and found" items at work and a Garmin Vivoactive fell out of a beat pair of moccasins. Bought a $13 charger online and it worked. I loved it for riding. You get a lot of statistics and can overlay graphs with HR/elevation/speed. I only had to charge it maybe once a week too, unlike my Apple watch

(Also, if you're swimming don't press the buttons underwater...did it in the lap pool and it messed it up)

Garmin does not support direct-from-device data transfer. Users always have to first upload the their data to Garmin Connect. Garmin Connect offers an API for requesting that data, e.g. from other apps. But unfortunately their API is damn expensive ?

For lap times, none of the wrist worn HRM's have a fast or accurate enough GPS to work properly.

I've tried Polar and Garmin at the track and they can't accurately follow the rapid directional changes that a rider on a dirt bike generates, the GPS in the watches cant follow the track well at all.

Lit Pro is the most expensive and kind of a pain in the ass to set up, but it has a super accurate GPS radio that can follow the track layout with extreme accuracy.

But if you are not looking for accurate lap times and only HRM data, any of the others work great.

Just my .02, and I know this is a dead thread anyway...

I used the MX buddy app with my watch this weekend. Its not perfect but for the investment I was really happy. Already had the watch so really just the 7$ for the app. As you can see its not as smooth as the Litpro but I am verry happy. If I keep using it I may upgrade to litpro but for my level and just adding a new way to enjoy riding this will work perfectly for now. Nice app Pietscher

I use Polar V800, it has automatic laptimes by position so just start the recording where you want it to take the laptimes and go.
