Qualifying for the AMA Amateur Championship at Loretta Lynns is not an easy task. Even if a rider is healthy its difficult. Usually 35-60 riders per class and only the top 6 move on (South Central Region) to the National. 3 - 15 minute moto's in hot summer heat at a blistering pace.

This year the track at 3 Palms in Conroe Texas was the toughest I have ever witnessed and I have been to every major race at 3 Palms for the last 20 years. There are always gnarly braking bumps and deep ruts, but at the Regional this year there were very deep ruts on every jump face too.

Hayes Edwards is the son of Colin Edwards two time World Superbike Champion, MotoGP racer and has several top 10 finishes at Loretta's when on 80's. While Hayes has been riding at Colins Boot Camp since he was in diapers, he has only been racing motocross for about 3 years now. Lets say he is on a fast learning curve.

During the pandemic Colin's Boot Camp that was geared towards training for Road Racing on TTR125's, shut down due to travel restrictions. Riders would come from all over the world. With Hayes starting to race motocross a few years ago, and no MX training facilities in South Texas, Colin decided to covert his Boot Camp to a Motocross facility.

Well, Hayes caught on pretty quick. Unfortunately he broke his collar bone exactly a week before the Regional and did not have a back up Regional. Hayes decided he wanted to get it plated and try to race. Well, he did and qualified in some of the fastest most stacked classes of the weekend, 250 B and Schoolboy II.

Good luck at the National Hayes!!!

I dont think Hayes went to LLs on 85s. his only finishes in the vault show two 15th places in both Supermini classes. Maybe the vault is wrong? Still impressive for how long he has ridden moto.

Been watching him since he was a little dude on a stock CRF50, sliding through turns with a style that would impress any flat track pro. His rate of progression since getting into MX is unreal. He is the real deal, but most importantly, he’s a REALLY good kid, too.

Correct. Hayes has only been racing for 3 years. That comment was about Colin, his Dad...

I also just want to point out, where the OP mentions the Texas Tornado Boot Camp shutting down the original operation and turning into a MX facility during Covid… TTBC is now back to their original program as well, holding 4 day all inclusive flat track camps utilizing TTRs, private camps, as well as Maddog races. Just want to clear that up. Most fun you can have on two wheels!

The year Colin got 2nd in the 85 12-13, Antunez got 4th and Ferry 9th. Colin and Jeff Dement were the two fastest 85 riders in Texas for a while. Jeff went on to a pretty successful career in motocross, while Colin got burnt out at around 14 and transitioned to Road Racing a few years later leading to several championships and much success.
