Seems to me when I was a kid, the guys I looked up to were rather stout men. Looking at the latest kids contesting the MX races, they look more like Chris McCarron and Eddie Arcaro.
The work ethic of today, and yesturday, are worlds apart.
I remember hanging out with guys like John DeSoto, Joel Robert, Gary Jones, and my (then) boss Torsten Halman. They were big men, I would say around 200+ pounds. In those days racing was work on bikes all week, and race on Sunday, no week day regiment, as I remember.
They would just muscle through the race on raceday.
Today I sometimes race against John DeSoto in endurance GPs. I beat him last time, that is on my resume. I have not beat Gary Jones yet, but I have passed him a couple times...I'll get him !!
Today the racers are lean, and mean. Today Motocross is a 24/7 job. If you want to win on Sunday, you'd better work all week to do so. Even the Amateurs from Loretta's, were better prepared then 70% of the already 250 guys.
Post edit...Rick Burgett, and Jo Jo Kellar, are the last big guys I can remember from the late 70s and early 80s

Tiki,
When I was a kid, the road from my house to the fire house (A place we used to mess around at cause they had a bunch of old burned cars and cool stuff) seemed long. Now, it is a lot closer. I also remember when we'd drive into town. My parents live 10 miles from town, it's nothing now, but then it seemed like forever. It's amazing how \"things\" seem smaller, now that we're bigger.

I was kinda thinking about that huck. Yosemite used to be so much larger when I was a kid.

As I recall you had a wider range than now. Jones and Weinert lanky but Desoto and Tripes were built like bulls. Then you had guys like Mike Bell and Gary Bailey.

True that, but back when Gary won his first...er..The first AMA title, he was not real thin. Today he is about 400 pounds.
I hope he reads this !

Mike Bell looks the same.
I still think the kids today could put a little more meat on their bones. Bikes go faster, kids get smaller. More ouch when gravity rears it's ugly head.
Rick Johnson was one Tough dude when he was racing. He trained for it as well. I think spinning on a bike is one thing, they still have to be built like a linebacker when the talent runs out.

seems most of the lites class is built like horse pilots. 450 class, only Tedesco and M. Alessi are the small ones. Windham, DV, Millsaps and Byrne are all on the tall end of the spectrum. Newcomers Hill and Bowers are definately not small either.
