1997 NESC Southwick Invitational the week before the Nat. Most locals rode both classes 125/250 expert. Every moto was a 30+2, on one hell of a rough track! I can only recall my own day and it was good! I remember not being able to drive home that night and gave the wheel to a friend. The next week at the Nat, i went 16/13 on the 250.

Just chug a Monster after every event like the pros do. You'll be fine.
Back then, guys like DeCoster would chug a beer or two between motos.

I don't remember them ever allowing it in the USA nationals, but I remember Barry Carsten riding 125 and 250 SX. I know he made several night shows in both and he made both mains at Daytona, Atlanta, and Cleveland (maybe more).

This.

Barry Carsten # 32 was the King of making both in SX and was able to make good $ by doing it.
And then Carsten and whatever friend(s) would drive all night (from Pontiac, Atlanta and other "local" SX races) to make his first gate at Englishtown on Sunday morning, usually riding at least the 125A and 250A classes and winning / finishing top 3 all races.

Dude was ridiculous!!

There was another D-6 local who would do this. Can't remember his name but he was a Mechanical Engineer and held a full time 9 - 5 job. Bruce Stratton? Anyone remember?

Lukaitis 9 (Scott Lukaitis) could speak to this probably.

Herlings did it a view years ago at a round, i believe Harfsen, of the dutch championship. He won all 4 moto’s.

Ron Turner used to do it every weekend at Saddleback except he'd do all three 125, 250, and 500 - Win all 3 half the time.
And probably made a good income!

It was Bruce. A lot of D3 upstate NY guys would run the Nationals on Saturday and then the local D3 and D4 races on Sunday that were drivable and on the way back.

I'm sure it was done every weekend. Unfortunately, most of the training facility kids never grew up racing locally and never had to drive anywhere all night to win enough scratch to head to the next national

Yes. Those guys were hardcore back in the day.

Carsten still races just about each weekend. He goes where they are paying contingency and wins. This weekend at Raceway Park he won 30+ Expert, 40+ Expert and 50+ Masters.

It is known to us old timers as "the hannah rule"

There was a very real concern that he would ride and win multiple classes, back when the races were 45 minutes +2, and at places like st pete, fla, in august....

It was a legitimate concern.
Very cool info. I didn't know this.

Is it even allowed to contest in both classes? and if so has anyone every raced 450 moto 1 250 moto 1 450 moto 2 and 250 moto 2? thats like 2 1/2hrs of moto!!!!! would be an impressive feat just to pull it off has it ever been done?
Like 15+ years ago a handful of guys would race both classes. But it was more common in sx as a way to maximize earnings. You qual both classes, race hard in one, and show up to gate finish a lap and to get scored. Boom double money

Hamish Hardwood races both MX2 and MX1 here in NZ, we do 3 x 20min races each class, he rode a 250SX in mx2 and then a 300SX in MX1,

he did the same in Aussie last year, running both classes on 2 strokes,
