In about 1978 ama passed a rule forbidding riders from racing multiple classes at pro nationals.

There was a very real concern that he would ride and win multiple classes, back when the races were 45 minutes +2, and at places like st pete, fla, in august....
It was a legitimate concern.
This. Back in the day, there would be several riders that would ride 2 or 3 different classes. Also, at each race there was only 1 "National" class and the other would be a support class only except for at Hangtown which always held both a 125 and 250 National every year.
In 1977, Bob Hannah won a 125 National, a 250 National and a 500 National as well as a 250 Super X, (which was the premier class back then) all in the same year. There's been several riders to win a race in each class, but none in the same year like Bob did.
