I've supported a number of local riders from Northern California who have participated in ISDE over the last 15 yrs but never once have I seen America hold the event. Have we ever hosted it?

Seem to remember it was held at Fort Hood, Texas one year back in the 70-80s.

Twice?

First in New England back in the early 70's (when it was still the ISDT) and then in Oklahoma in the mid 90's

The sad fact is that an ISDE in the USA is pretty tough to pull off. You need to have a ton of usable land all within a pretty general vicinity. Then you have to convince people in that area to let hundreds of guys on motorcycles race around the woods AND use the roads for transfer sections. You also need to have a location capable of working as the paddock and all of this needs to be within a reasonable distance from hotels, airports, etc.

Yes, this works for regular Enduros here in the US but that's a 1-day event. Oh and don't get me started on how tough it is to host an enduro within a National Forest...

Other countries are much more accommodating to making an ISDE happen, it's just a lot tougher to do so here.

Now, being "in the know" in the off-road scene, I can tell you that there's multiple groups interested in trying to make it happen, and I actually even know of a venue that's been discussed but as far as I know it's nothing more than discussion at the moment.

With the right group behind it, it could definitely happen and I honestly believe that we could see an ISDE in the USA sometime down the road.

The Utah desert seems like a good fit for ISDE. Their Governor was running for the republican presidential nomination this year, and I remember seeing him riding a CRFX in one of his campaign commercials. He could probably make it happen.

Utah is definitely one of the places that comes to my mind for suitable places. Gary Herbert is the governor, and he not only supports riding but he WANTS races in Utah... Definitely somewhere I see it being possible when it comes to support from the local government.

The other places I was kind of thinking of are West Virginia and South Carolina. Both of which have a TON of usable land and are a bit more lenient when it comes to riding.

WV has the Hatfield McCoy trail system (just using that as an example of being open to riding, not saying that would be the ideal ISDE location) and South Carolina hosts about 5 different enduros in both the National Enduro and SETRA series'...

I worked for Al Baker Jr. in the early 70's and he thought that we should do what all the other countries do, and set up the I.S.D.T in the place where the home country has the biggest advantage. He thought the event could be held in Las Vegas and use the area that was being used for the "Mint 400" and areas like that. The Euro's wouldn't know what hit them. Deep silt and sand, hot weather and conditions that would help Western desert riders and Baja specialists, who should make up the US team. I thought it was a great idea. And this was years before the Paris-Dakar.

Only two ISDE's in the US, '73 in Dalton Massachusetts and Zink Ranch in Tulsa in' 94.

I worked with Al when I was at Suzuki and Al was Johnny O's manager. Al and I eventually hooked up to develop the DR series as Al had unreal experience working with the Honda XR series, we had a great time working and riding out of his Hesperia office. We talked at length fairly often about a Las Vegas ISDE as you are right, the Euros wouldn't know what literally hit them when Caselli would have a 5 minute lead after the 1st day, Ecology tires and all!!

I thought they did run one in Texas.

Hey, while we wait for an ISDE,
heres another for the guys in the USA that like the World Class events,
May 25th and 26th, in Tennessee.

4 or 5 hours from my place, yeah baby...........

At this point, the world trials rounds in Tennessee are still provisional. The US series will have its annual meeting in a few weeks, and there everyone involved will vote and see if there is enough assistance available to make it happen.

If you think it's easier in Europe, you make a big mistake... Germany is one of the most environment friendly country in the world, with a strong ecologists lobbies . If they can pull it off, it is possible everywhere.

Aren't the German rounds usually held on army training grounds?

It depends. Not the ISDE, at least.

Dietrich and Casselli has both finished 2nd overall which is the best American finish ever.

Kurt also won his class one year, he's the only American to ever do that.

From a team standpoint, the Trophy Team has been on the podium a few times and the Junior Trophy Team has won once (Casselli, Dietrich, David Pearson, Russell Bobbit I believe)

For the most part the Euros (and Aussies) are faster than us and our guys have to try to beat them at an unfamiliar format as there aren't many ISDE style events in the US. In recent years, due mainly to Kurt and Rich Casselli (RIP bud) the US has stepped up our game and the results are starting to show it, maybe someday we'll get that elusive win!

USA took the Junior Trophy in '91 (Steve Hatch, Jimmy Lewis, David Rhodes and Chris Smith) and '06 (Kurt Caselli, Ricky Dietrick, Russell Bobbit, and David Pearson). Women's in '07 and never taken the World Trophy.
