Hansen nose down in the rhythms

I barely remember the 2 stroke era, was the way Hanson perfectly timed those sections with nose down landings common among the elite, or is that a newer development?

I've seen Hanson at the local tracks a number of times. He always seems to be very good at getting the landing angle of the bike spot on. Last time I saw him on a 450, he had the same look on each jump. Definitely a fun guy to watch on a dirt bike.

That was definitely a staple of Jeremy on his more confident "feelin' it" nights (which was most of the time...).

Anyone remember how MC would "lift" the rear of the bike with the heel of his boot under the side panel?

Edit: Nose down examples starting at about 4:10...

James Stewart also was very confident and over the front of the bike a lot.

It's almost like he is forcing the bike down to keep it low while getting the front end resdy for a peefect landing and
transition instead of scrubbing, wouldn't suprise me if he was doing that.

Some buddies and I were talking about this the other day, and what you have to take into consideration is that Hanny learned to do this before scrubbing was invented.

He learned it from his dad. DHMA has two jumping techniques called maximizing and minimizing. Maximizing is jumping nose up, like seat bouncing for more length. Minimizing is jumping hips against bars to get the front end down in air for minimal arc.

Josh’s mechanics used to move his kill switch to middle of the bars because he would hit it with his hips and kill the bike.

Another master of this was Teddy Maier.

We were talking about this, too, during Hanny's runs. The dude is so smooth and technically perfect when he wants to be.

As aefferz pointed out, Stew rode the front end harder than anyone I can think of. Unless he was seat bouncing some crazy quad/rhythm, he damn near rode the front wheel like a unicycle, which bit him on more than one occasion.

I've been around for a while and I've seen McGrath do that from time to time but it never made me think "oh shit, this dude is going over the bars!".

Watching what Hanny did at RBSR, there was a split second where I thought the dude was about to crash. I would not characterize what Hanny did as "commonplace" in the 2-stroke era. What he did at RBSR was special.

I remember when Bubba was just starting in the 125 supercross series how he used to already be jumping nose down and would still tap the rear brake to get it down further.

Hansen was a joy to watch last weekend.

Another person who jumped everything and liked his nose down through the air was Ezra Lusk who Josh's bike was designed to look like.

Hansen has had that nose down ability as far back as I can remember....

First time I ever saw Hanny ride was 01-02 world minis when he was on his 125.
When he would hit his back brake it looked like he was going to endo every time, but he always landed perfectly......I swear if you put a dime on the landing he could tap it with his front wheel every lap.

One has to wonder just how far his talent could have taken him had he not had a couple of “off” years...

Scrubbing was going on, before Josh was born, but Stewart took it to a new level and everyone who wasn’t aware, thought he invented it. JoJo Keller was scrubbing back in the late 70’s and Guy Cooper as well. Plenty more, but it’s been going on for decades...
