Never saw this photo before. By the looks on everyone's faces it looks like some heavy shit talk is going on.
Great pic, hopefully someone has the story behind it.

I dunno, but I bet Hannah has/had more respect for Magoos grit than he does for 99% of todays guys.

I don't think anyone disliked Danny... As for Hannah. I kid I kid. I am sure Hannah respected Danny. How couldn't he? One of the very few that could pass and maybe beat hannah at the time.
Damn, he was one bad bro.

That was such an awesome time to be involved in moto, I feel very fortunate to have grown watching the moto scene in NORCAL. The Golden State Series races were the best, got to see the very best ride the local tracks and being able to sit and walk all parts of the tracks was awesome. Last time I went to a local track and couldn’t walk around the track killed it for me and have no desire to go watch anymore. I need to feel the roost, screaming bikes and the ground shaking. Love these threads as they take me back

Because everyone who races mx at pro level now is sooo soft. Like anyone could do it.
Everyone knows bob Hannah was a badass, but quit the stupid comparisons, our best humans skill set is adaptability, because guys perform in a different set of criteria on a dirtbike compared to 40 yrs ago, doesn't mean they couldn't do what Hannah was doing.
I feel very fortunate to have been able to experience mx in what many may agree was a truly special time in motocross.
One of the best things was how laid back and personable it was.
We went to the opening outdoor national of 1983 at gatorback. A buddy had booked a room at the holiday Inn where most of the factory riders were staying.
The Saturday night before the race was just awesome.
It was all box vans. The mechanics were finishing up the bikes. Some were working at the trucks, others were working in the ground floor rooms. You could catch glimpses of pieces of plywood on the beds and bike parts and tools all spread out.
The cool part was that the top riders in the sport at the time we're just hanging out and talking amongst themselves, friends, and fans.
What made me remember this is hearing Johnny 'o talk about what an animal Magoo was when testing.
He was talking with several fans about how chandler had been testing in the previous days and had broken a foot peg off, and how he paced around waiting for it to be repaired. He and bailey talked about most mechanics simply had to do basic bike maintainence on practice bikes, but Magoo's had to strip it down daily to repair cracks. There was never anything but awe in their tone the entire time they were talking about him and his riding antics.
It is a cool memory. I wish smart phones and youtube had been around then about the same as I feel badly that young fans now don't get to experience some of the stuff we did.
Got to see him ride at Unadilla in 1981 in the Trans-USA 500cc support class.Of course back then Unadilla laid fallow until the Saturday of the race weekend to see him chew up that grass covered sod on a Honda CR480 was nuts to see him jump in to Gravity Cavity on our side and jump out on the other (which sucked) was truly awesome.Balls out does not even come close to describing his style. I am now was then and forever will be a life long Danny Magoo Chandler fan. All these years later I've never seen again somebody at that level with that skill who just purely seemed to love and I mean love riding and racing and I fear we never will.
