Need some help on a potential ktm 125. How would I identify if a bike was once ridden by a pro? I found a bike that is claimed to be owned or ridden by Grant Langston. 2005 KTM 125. Need help asap as I will have to jump on it tomorrow. Any help would be appreciated. Guy sent me a photo of the frame with the ama number.

Well that appears to be an official AMA pro racing inspection sticker, but every rider that enters an AMA pro motocross event gets one on the race bike..

They don't keep track of the inspection numbers after the race season is over, at least that's what Jeff Canfield said.

Finally, Langston went to Pro Circuit Kawasaki for the 2005 season, and to my knowledge he was off the KTM 125 after 2003 anyway?

I’ve been told it has RMW wheels, Magura clutch, IMS pegs, Diamond Throttle, brembo brakes. I’m not all that familiar with the parts that were put on these bikes.

Either way, if you are a big Langston fan it may be worth buying if its cheap, because I'm not sure if it has any collectable value. I doubt if it has any certificate or proof that Grant actually raced it?

Langston lost the 2001 championship when his wheel broke in the last moto, so it's not a championship motorcycle.

Langston was one of the fastest riders ever to ride a 125 IMO And was so damn fun to watch. Having said that, I’d be a little apprehensive about buying any former pros bike. Just because it was written like and by a…..pro😉 pay special attention to the frame.

Either way good luck dude!

I don’t believe it is a Langston bike as those bikes had a lot of really trick parts. I still would love to track down who owned it. I’m going to try to pick it up for a low price tomorrow.

Doma pipe would be a giveaway if it was legit. Didn't he run those during that era?

From what I’ve seen they take all the trick parts off and basically sell it stock with only ots parts left on.

The fact the seller says you need to buy it now or it’s gone and also the fact that they didn’t know what year the bike was are a couple of red flags in my opinion. Kinda sounds like the seller is just trying to get more money out of it by saying it’s one of Langston’s old bikes.

Yes, sage advice. No legit seller should be saying ‘buy now or it’s gone’. Serious red flag. Grant would not approve, guaranteed.

It's probably pretty cheap and the OP knows if he doesn't buy it it will be gone. That's what happens to good deals, they're gone in a day... Sometimes in a few hours.

I wonder if it's the same bike he was riding when he pulled one of the dirtiest moves ever in MX, when he essentially ruined Bobby Bonds career at Hangtown? I loved the karma he received with his rear tire falling apart and him losing the title.

Yeah Bobby barely ever breaking top 10 was Grant Langstons fault.

But you wouldn’t say “vehicle VIN number” would you..
I thought it was fairly obvious it was a vehicle. VIN means Vehicle Identification Number, why would I specify it’s a vehicle twice?

I think they are pointing out the N in VIN means number, But you said run the VIN *Number, saying it twice in a way.

Do most factory bikes even have a VIN? I’ve seen several former factory bikes that don’t have any ID numbers, frame or motor. Impossible to register, officially they just don’t exist.

Surely if they are production homologated, they will have VIN? Who knows, Maybe they run frames from the parts supply and not a bike out a crate?
