I used Craigslist to get these lowers from a school library and the small upper was from my moms kitchen that I painted, works pretty good, need to clean my mess from summer...

Also bought the red craftsman lower and part of the black upper off craigslist for under $50 with some miscellaneous tools...drill press was from a guy I work with that wanted it out of his garage for $20, large vise was at an auction for $10

Slowly working on getting my garage setup. Eventually will have it all insulated & dry walled. Going to build a new work bench also. But this works for now

I have a buddy whose family owns a cabinet business and they have jobs where they are told to take all the old stuff to the curb all the time. Call a place in your area and inquire, see what they say and if they'll give you a heads up or sell you something they have taken out cheap. Or as others have suggested the materials section of CL. I'm about to start my setup as well and am looking for design direction.

I gave enough consideration to doing that for my air compressor at home that I ran a line of copper tubing under the driveway behind my garage along with a piece of conduit. Years later I finally bought a big compressor and now not sure that I want to put it out there. Decisions, decisions....

NATEP231,

Thanks for asking BMR179 about this build. I was scrolling through, saw that engine and frame and thought, "Wait a minute! I smell fun build!!!"

XR100 in a CR80 frame. Aaaaah. Beauty. Some people think it's a waste of time and will always be down on power. I think, "This is the same argument about 2 strokes." Yes. 2 smokes are wonderful too.

I was going to buy that set at first and then I came across the one with the two extra cabinets under the bench for $150 more. I couldn't find those two cabinets for $150 or less so I bought this one.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/NewAge-Products-Bold-3-156-in-W-x-77-in-H-Stee…

Back on page two, I posted a pic of mine. It took a while to put them all together, but it can be done by yourself. It would be much easier with help though!

I am in the process of getting under cabinet lights and figuring out what i want to do for the wall under the cabinets and above the bench. I want to do pegboard, but I'm not a fan of the stuff at Lowes/HD so I'm looking at other options. Currently debating about doing brushed aluminum, stainless steel or plastic from http://diamondlifegear.com/

The problem with their metal peg board are the dimensions of the 2'x4' sizes are actually 21.5" x 45.5". Plastic dimensions are exact 24"x48".

If anyone has suggestions for metal pegboard options, I'm all ears.

I like this look!

Yes, 8x2 ft and when the top gets beat up flop it to the clean side.

Can never have too much counter space. Bigger projects hog up space. I spend a few hours figuring out a setup that works for me. For instance, the height of the work benchs for specific tasks. Enjoy your shop.

As far as benches go, not the best, it's only 2'.5"x6'
But it does everything I need. I definitely want to get cabinets to clean it all up

Save your money.

Scour Craigslist and local facebook "for sale" groups for kitchen cabinets. You can get them dirt cheap (sometimes free if you offer your labor to remove them before they are out) and you get so much storage space for your $$$.

Shop your local Menard's Lowes, HD, etc., for clearance laminate counter top.I like laminate because it's cheap, pretty durable, and easy to replace 5-10 years down the road when it starts getting dinged up. Melamine sheet also works really good and you can gain about 2" of usable space by not having a backslash.

I like pegboard between the base and upper cabinets for the tools that get used on the regular.

My favorite workbenches are my ones built on top of base cabinets. It is just so handy to have those big storage compartments underneath. I threw a nice coat of paint on mine and added some SS hardware. They look sharp.

For $600, if you are thrifty, you could probably fit your whole garage with used cabinets and laminate counter tops vs maybe one nice ~36 to 60" tool chest workstation. You will always want more counter and storage space than you think you can need.

If this is your first time being a home owner, I am just worried that you are going to be surprised with all of the little financial gremlins that consistently pop up.
I agree with scouring for cabinets. I have a bunch of those from a Veterinarian building that sold to a Dentist, who tore everything out. Got them for free, so that was the best.
For the work surface, go find an elevator repairman and ask him if they have any old doors lying around you could have/buy. My neighbor is one and he gave me 4 doors! All stainless and smooth for the most part. They work great!
Another good option would be to find some solid wood doors from a business. You could cut them up to size and cover them. My workplace had an auction, so I purchased 12 fire rated doors that ranged from 40"-48" wide for $110. I sold all but 3 of them. I haven't used them yet, but we are planning on moving next year, so I have them in my hip pocket for use in the new place.

Good luck and it's very nice to see a young person trying to get ahead. My son, who is oversees right now as part of the National Guard, wants to come home and purchase a house. The problem is that he doesn't have a full-time job, so no bank will give him a loan. He is VERY ambitious, so I'm sure he'll figure out a way.

Just a quick suggestion for those of us with wooden work benches!

You can top them with stick on floor tiles of you can buy a couple of cans of spray on rubber for garden tools!

The vinyl top is easy to clean & replace!

First congrats to you OP, and it's already been said but WOW this thread is awesome!
My house came with a workbench made with an old solid wooden door atop kitchen cabinets, but reading this the additional possibilities are endless. Thanks everyone for the great read and new ideas

Here is mine. Bench is 10' dead tree carcus, 30" deep top with 18" deep lower shelf covered with 1/4 steel. Lots of electrical outlets, plumbed in air, pegboard to go to tools and parts. 6' triple bank box with top and hutch for tool storage and left of that is mandatory beverage cooler. Lots of good ideas in this thread, good luck.

I went with two sets of New Age cabinets. Also hung the units on reinforced slatwall.
