So here is the "what's this worth" CR250. Obviously it was worth whatever someone was willing to pay for it on Saturday and that was $1000.00. Bought it sight unseen other than a camera phone pic, my buddy left a deposit on it for me till I could get there to pick it up. Got title and owners manual from the gray haired 70 plus year old owner and loaded it up. At home I turned on the stale gas, pulled the choke , pushed it gently through the first time and then promptly kicked it to life. Shut it off before the revs went up because I could only imagine what the air filter looked like.

Dusty and dingy, in need of an extremely good cleaning and race prep.

Air filter? LOL, It didn't disappoint! About what I expected on something that had been sitting for so long.

What I didn't expect was how clean the intake track was. Other than a few crumbles off the filter when I pulled it out, it is absolutely spotless.

Ready to wash.

Now ready for a good cleaning, greasing and reassembly. I'm getting rusty at this stuff, took damn near 2 hours to get it torn down.

That thing looks great. I can't believe you didn't clean the carb and ride it before tearing it down.

The front rim has a pretty nice flat spot on it. Anyone got a spare stock silver DID laying around?

Bad timing - I just gave one to Tiki for FREE. I think he paid $12 for shipping.

If you want an '04 top clamp (so you can use the CRF-style front number plate) or OS bar clamp adapters, let me know.

Hate to make you all sick here but how about a NEW in the crate 04 CR250? Asking 2900 but most likely it will go for 2K considering its been sitting for 5-6 yrs now. I think i will take it just for the hell of it, maybe leave it in the crate even!

Thats a steal, I just bought a super clean 03 CR250. I've but more wear and tear on it in the last month i've had it than it had seen proir to that. If you clean it up you could flip it for a pretty nice profit... even after riding it for a year. Kinda of makes me sad I am helping to destroy an endagered species.

Newmann before you even put that airbox back on, order the PC Racing airbox kit for it. That year had a flimsy bracket that allowed dirt to get in the motor because of flex and they have a nice red anodized one they make, also a neprene gasket for the filter, so you'll never have to grease the filter..My '02 with '06 plastic..

Type ALaughing I might take some of you up on some of the offers as this thing goes together. Definitely trying to keep it on the cheap but there are probably one or two things I'll blow the budget on! It's amazing how stained and crappy looking these aluminum frames get to looking especially the linkage components down low. Used a chrome / wire wheel cleaner solution from the car wash vendor that comes by the shop to clean everything up with. A lot of the acid based cleaners will discolor anodized parts and damage the zinc coatings on bolts and other misc parts so I chose the complete teardown approach for the aluminum parts. Anything else got the cleaner diluted down a little more and with a couple different grades of Scotch-Brite has most everything looking new again. Here's the frame all cleaned up.

This might just motivate me to do my 450 this winter. Nothing like tearing your bike down to nothing, cleaning, greasing and putting it back together. It's good for the soul.

I just picked up an 03 as well for 1200. It sat for months and needed some cleaning....

Damn, newmann!

I'd have changed the air filter and trany oil, re-greased the steering stem, swing-arm, and wheel bearings, lubed the chain, and been on the track in a couple hours.

What the hell are you thinking?!?!

What did you use on the engine to get it that clean with that finish?

The engine is probably the biggest let down so far. I'm using an acid based chrome cleaner I get from the detail guy/vendor that comes by our shop. Works great on forged aluminum or machined billet type pieces but leaves a semi dark gray film on cast pieces. Used the cleaner with a gray Scotch-Brite scuff pad (approx. 600 grit ) to clean all the crust, funk and oxidation off. Rinsed it clean with water and dried it with compressed air. Had to use the scuff pad to clean the film off of it. Used a little aerosol carb/parts cleaner to rinse it and toweled it off. Scotch Brite and WD-40 works good for a lot of stuff. Just make sure any scuff pad scrubbing goes with the grain of any brushed finishes. And always try to go the same direction on other pieces you are cleaning up. I hate seeing stuff scrubbed all different directions and in circles. And never, I repeat never use a wire wheel on a drill or bench grinder to clean up aluminum parts!!! Amazed by some of the stuff I've seenWoohoo

Dude, awesome!

What chrome cleaner do you use, and what might be an equivalent? I used my dremel with the brass wire brush on mine to clean it up, with the grain as you've mentioned. Looks great, but I'd rather use a cleaner.

You could probably find some wire wheel cleaner at the auto parts store. They'll usually have the scotch brite as well.

Heh heh heh... I know this "scotch brite" entity. Have seen it used before. Smile

Thanks dude, just wondering what will clean the oxidation off my case that I can get off the shelf. Basically, what works best. You've obviously had success here.

Beautiful bike, great price. I'm jealous!

Looks to me like the previous owner siliconed the airboot to the airbox and sealed it. I had an awesome 02 and before the PC racing seal came out the hot fix was silicone.
