GP announcing

I never thought I would follow the GP's like I do now (at least not the way I did via magazine coverage in the late 70's - early 80's), until Villo decided to run it. My question is why do we have 4 announcers for sx/mx (Ralph, Jeff, Daniel and Jenny) vs. just Malin in the GP's? Malin does an amazing job and sometimes doesn't even mind just shutting TFU so you can hear the bikes. No pet comments or meaningless banter, just good ole commentating. Reminds me of Lynn Nickerson.

And his "balls" comment was classic this weekend!

“I’m not Swap…”

My favorite moment in this season is in Patagonia when he says "Herlings is in NFG mode" or something similar when he was hunting down Cairoli.

Malin is awesome.

Adam Wheeler was in there with him a bit this weekend that was okay too.

I hear people say Malin is Biased towards Cairoli but I really do not hear it.

Because MXGP cater for the fans , and dont insult their inteligence, SX is aimed at your average american.

I would say most of what Ralph says, that seems stupid, is to try and explain everything to new fans.

Let's face it, most of the people watching MXGP are already fans. I'd say supercross gets more of the new to moto type crowd than GP does.

I enjoy the broadcasts and the racing is outstanding, two things can improve the show IMO;

Malin needs a permanent partner in the booth.

More bike sound is required.

i liked Alessi with Malin at USGP , last year ...Alessi did a great job

the funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it

Agreed , Mike did a great job, for me , when you are doing sports, you cater to the fan, you dont get NBA , NFL explaining the rules for those who 'might be watching for the first time' .

|

4/16/2018 10:56 AM

Malin is great to listen too...no "fake" or "manufactured" enthusiasm (Like we get from Ralph).

And like PhilG said, they need to cater to the seasoned fan of the sport. Not the casual observer.

Marlin is hands down the best mx announcer by far and like you said he does it all by himself and definitely keeps you on top of everything important going on in the race from gate drop to checkered flag as I swear it’s nite and day difference to the coverage we get!! He says some funny stuff as well which will get ya laughing and he will even call the camera crew out from time to time if they aren’t shooting the important stuff when something is going down and needs to be seen!!

|

4/16/2018 11:11 AM

I just watched a bit of F1 China and it was geared towards the enthusiast as well. SX is exciting enough, do we really need Lurch screaming at 14k rpm prior to the gate drop?

|

4/16/2018 11:22 AM

I agree Malin is awesome. The MXGP TV package is without doubt geared towards the enthusiast & that's what why pay the yearly subscription. I don't wanna know what a tear off is & why it's used, coz I already know.

I think the only reason Malin comes across biased towards Herlings is because Herlings does some incredible things on a bike, especially line choice & hopping over braking bumps. So as an ex rider he knows how hard it is what Herlings is doing.

Agreed, Malin does a great job!

And he has to cover 4 30+2 races, plus qualifying on Saturday. That is a lot to cover without being repetitive or boring.

And he does a great job not only pronouncing some very difficult names, but he really does a good job giving some props to riders outside the top 10 and announcing the team names so many of the riders get exposure (not just the top 5 like most SX broadcasts).

And the only slight bias I notice, is he tends to focus on the riders from England (which is understandable since that is his home Country and I am sure he is more familiar with those riders). But overall he is very knowledgeable about pretty much all the riders. And on a side note- Prado will be the next Herlings. That kid is an incredible talent.

And like the OP stated above, I was never a regular follower of the GP scene until Villopoto went over to the GP's. I have subscribed to the MXGP TV season pass every season since then, and watch every race including qualifying races. So the Villopoto experiment may not have gone as well as hoped for some, but it did bring in some new fans to the GP series.

Malin*s comment when Herlings wheelied trough the ruts: '' How cool was that''laughing
Malin, is no doubt best in the business. He can lighten you about the wild card guys you never heard about. Remind you about situations what happened in the same corner 3 years ago. Truly. Nothing complain about

I chuckle every time he groans/yells.

“Gwwwahhhhhhhh” - Malin everytime someone gets a little out of line.

Lurch is embarrassing for the sport. Whoever thinks he brings anything to the show , needs a slap. And be made to listen to him on a loop till they pull the plug.

Watching the GP's is like watching hockey on hockey night in Canada.

Watching Supercross is like watching hockey on fox sports back in the days of the flashing puck.

One caters to an audience that knows the sport, the other caters to the casual observer with no knowledge of what's happening.

I suppose the thing I like best about the GP's is that the riders don't need to thank everybody from their dog to the truck driver on the podium. It comes across far more professional. SX is just an infomercial by comparison.

Empty a bag of skittles into the toilet and then flush. It's like watching a five second long nascar race.

I agree, Malin is awesome. I'm amazed how he can announce 4 different classes by himself and know nearly every guy by what their riding/wearing. I really like Adam Wheeler as well.

I just wanted to say, as a motocross commentator myself, there's a lot of good announcer's around the world, but Paul Malin is the best I've seen and heard thus far.

Malin and Emig at MXdN is the best announcing team IMO. They compliment each other very well.

|

4/16/2018 1:43 PM

What I like about Malin is that he seems to pick up lots of small details. Like he would say: "rider x just had a small bobble coming out that turn" and then I have to rewind because I missed it myself. Meanwhile in SX just this past race you see Forkner eating shit in the whoops and both Emig and Ralph didn't comment on it until the shot after where he was already on the ground.

Check 5:40.

Here, sx and mx is more of a show as far as the announcers go.
