I just got off the phone with the insurance gal at GEICO Powersports. She gave me a quote of $99 for the year, and a $50 deductible for theft and vandalism (comprehensive) insurance.

I dunno, this seems TOO GOOD to be true. anybody else have exp with actually submitting a claim against the theft of their bike with geico?

I have had $75 per bike/quad coverage for years from an odd little company. They can never keep it straight when I sell/trade models and the vin changes, so it makes you wonder.

I would trust Geico more.

yes.. that's what we talked about on the phone.. She said they go by NADA value, which for my '07 would be around 3300. That would be .03 % of the bikes value, to insure against theft. As a frame of reference, I pay .12% on my 2004 nissan for just comprehensive

It just seems fishy to me, to have such low rates on something so rampantly stolen, with such a low recovery rate.

Nationwide. Half of what Geico quoted me. Progressive was double of what Geico quoted me. Quite a comical discussion as well. They dont insure the bike at the house - home owners. Dont insure the bike at the track - racing. Dont insure the bike in the truck - truck insurance.

Then what do you insure it for? No answer.

Thats interesting tiki. I stopped doing business with progressive since they are so shady.
So, you are advocating nationwide? Have you (or anyone you've known) actually had to file a claim for loss? I know for a fact, my homeowners will not cover an MX bike or ATV, if it's not being used "for upkeep or maintenance of my property" I told the lady I could start using it as a garden tiller every spring if that would qualify. She handed me over to a rep at powersports instead..

I am new to insuring a bike against loss, I never knew there was such a thing. I've always just chained them down with a floor anchor and taped used range silhouettes outside the door.

General Insurance (all polices are different)

Homeowners excludes any motorized vehicle unless it is used to service the property....and your also correct about the example for your 4-wheeler Jtiger.

I would argue if you had a 4-wheeler with a tiller, then yes it is used to service your property and it is covered if something happened........it may not be what the company intended it to mean but that is the wording in the policy and that is what you go by. (my family has owned a independent agency since 1948, we work very hard to find coverage, its not necessarily black and white depending on what happens.)

The dirt bike policies I have seen are covered for more than Vandalism and theft. I would also want fire covered in case a garage burns (remember your homeowners policy will not cover a motorized vehicle unless it is used to service the property)

Tiki I would say you did not get a knowledgeable professional on the other end of the line.....as your homeowners and your truck insurance will not cover your dirt bike no matter what. I blame it on poor training, there is a lot to this business and it takes years to figure every little thing out (even then you never no everything).........but that is pretty basic, she should have known better.

As far as being at the races, if someone steals it, its covered, if someone vandalizes it, its covered, if you have comprehensive and collision coverage on it (I know progressive offers this) and you smash it on the track racing, no its not covered as that is a racing incident and that is without a doubt not covered by a typical policy. But if your trail riding and you hit a tree or your buddy head on, it’s covered under collision. Fire, theft, vandalism, ect, covered under comp.

I just typed this fast and tried not to get complicated based on what I read above, if anyone has any questions feel free to PM me and I would be more than happy to try and help a fellow motocrosser.

Nationwide is the home and auto insurance we have. So it was natural to add the bikes. I called progressive first being the sponsor at the time of the SX season. I just said yeah insure it and not really paid attention. I called with a question a couple months later and asked what am I insuring. The call went something like this:

Thank you for calling... how can I help.
What is my insurance covering?
Oh thats easy. We insure your bike.
its a race bike, you still insure it?
Well not while you are racing.
So you insure it at the house from theft.
Well no, your homeowner insurance covers that.
So you insure it in my truck?
We insure your bike to and from the track.
If it falls out and causes an accident?
No that is your auto insurance.
What if its stolen
That's a tough one.
What do you insure my bike for? What exactly am I paying for?
If your bike gets damaged we insure it for that.
But I race the bike. If I crash you insure that?
No
What if I crash into a crowd? Do you cover the people I hit?
no.
What exactly am I paying for?

I called Nationwide the next day. They insure it for theft in the back of the truck, at the house, they insure it if there is a auto/house fire for replacement. Cost $48 a year here in California. Progressive was like $69 a month. We needed nationwide once when I was rear-ended. They fixed my truck in three weeks, then went after the ahem... visiting person and owner that hit me.

I like the range silhouette idea... going to have to use that one.

I'm currently in the process of switching all my policies from Progressive and GMAC over to Allstate. Allstate had to jump through hoops so they wouldn't have to give me full coverage on the dirt bikes. As soon as they figured out how to do that, the came out with a powersports policy and are now reworking the whole deal.
I paid $75 a month for each dirt bike and they were on the same policy as my street bike (don't know if that made a difference with the rates). Now with Allstate, the dirt bikes will be on their own policy. Once I get the paperwork, I'll read it over and make sure everything I want covered really is.

I'm in Texas, and I was under the impression from my carrier that my bikes are covered by homeowners if stolen, or lost by fire.(as long as they are in the garage)

Can one assume the rules are different from state to state?

Irrespective, I'll be calling to find out for sure.

Progressive $75.00 per bike. when the Ricans stole both my 450's last year they paid me 8g's for my race bike. i got my practice bike back with some damage, they wrote me a check for $1300.00 and are still hounding the cockroach to get me my deductible.
by far the best $150.00 i ever spent!!!

Did you tell them your name is Kevin Windham and you're on the GEICO commercials?

i shit you not, ive been with progressive insurance for years, when i got my new 450 and called to add it on, they told me they dont see my name in the computers. so where has my money gone that i sent them? they claim they never got any money from me. my credit card statement says otherwise.

That Warren Buffett is no joke. He's putting on an ad campaign for Geico that has several insurance carriers worried about his media blitz. Even Allstate is cutting personel to offset the effects of Warren's multi million dollar blitz strategy.

They going to insure my 09 CRF450 on this stupid decompression pin? I just had mine go this past Saturday. I had it replaced once already back in March, and now it's heading to the shop for another "update"... I'm not super pumped to say the least.

I have GEICO ins on my VTX 1300. I hit a deer last July, the adjuster was at my house the next day and cut me a check that day for repairs.

I've had State Farm for the last 14+ years & they are great. I learned the hard way that motorized vehicles are not covered under home owners warranty, when I had a bike stolen out of my garage while I was stationed in Vegas. Hard pill to swallow, but since then, I have had separate policies on everything...bikes, minis, jet skis, etc. Right now, I pay $19/year for my kid's CRF 70 w/full-coverage & $100 deduct & I pay $29/year for my KLX 110. Prior to selling my CRF, I was paying $45/year, all with $100 ded. Back in '03, I crashed whilst in 3rd on the first lap of my first moto in a race & got run over by a few guys who had nowhere to go. It jacked me up pretty good, but also the bike (yzf 250). I ended up with a cracked frame, pipe, & bunch of cosmetic stuff. I didn't tell my agent that I was racing at the time, just that I had crashed while riding. They paid for everything w/no questions asked...new frame & associated parts (bearings, races, etc), pipe, plastic, etc....all told I think it was about $2300. I spec'd out all the parts/labor/etc myself, got estimates from two local shops, submitted the claim, & they cut me a check minus the deductible, then I ordered the parts & did the work myself. I also made good $$ from AFLAC on that one. Hell, over the life of my riding/racing career, AFLAC paid off better than any investment I've made. I wish my 401k put up those kinds of numbers. Heh...//TJ

No, I told them I was Justin Barcia and thrilled to be on their team.

and I agree about the details not being needed. I was just wondering how/and if they paid out in different circumstances. For example, some goon stealing my bike from the back of the truck. Or, someone breaking into a shed or garage where my bike is being stored.

thanks for the info, and the sarcasm

I hear you Tiki,

Just sucks when you think you’re calling a professional and you get that kind of response. I realize insurance is easy to joke about but when something serious happens and you lose out financially because the girl on the other end of the phone did not know what she was doing.

I just wanted to point out a few things I knew to try and help someone else who may be viewing the thread and having the similar problems.

Everyone is allowed to make mistakes, but you have to fix your mistakes and do the right thing if that happens and I know first hand our business does just that.

A perfect example is sbarrington's story, they don’t' all do that and all I can say is it’s not a bad idea to have a good relationship with whoever you do your insurance with, not just the cheapest price from a 1-800 number.
