Anyone have insight on riding with the right wrist 100% fused. After 3 different hand/wrist specialist’s opinions it looks like this is my only option.

I just changed the title of this thread. If you search Vital, you can find Bauer’s experience on his right wrist fusion and It looks like this was a much bigger problem than a left wrist.

Here is is...

You may lose a lot of the ability to twist, so a thumb throttle may be necessary.

I’ll tell you something about doctors, they’re worse than cops when it comes to covering each other’s asses. I’m not disparaging doctors or cops, but they both live in fear of retribution for screwing up and that means lawsuits.
For any major surgery decision, especially one that doesn’t sound like a positive outcome you have to work the system, out of state if necessary, and less said the better when talking to new Drs.
I went through hell with my wrist and if it weren’t for a personal (off the record) consultation with a Dr. who’s sons raced Moto I would be a cripple. Even with him he wouldn’t touch it because 1) difficult surgery and 2) he knew the first Dr. had F’d up and he didn’t want to be involved on any level. The whole experience was a nightmare and although I never intended to sue anyone the paranoia and bullshit was real. Much more to story but would take the bottom of a 12 pack to tell it all.
I would do any and all the legwork in my power, calling in favors, going to university med schools, extra scans, money, whatever necessary to avoid a wrist fusion.

If you have scaphoid issues you should consider Dr Hausman at Mt Sinai in NYC he fixed my left and right. My left most likely would have been fused if not for him.

I've had a scaphoid non union break for 17 years now. It was missed originally and found as old break when I broke my wrist again years later. Doctor talked about fusing it I elected to do nothing they plated the new break and left the rest as is. I just used a wrist brace after. I don't have full range of motion, but it's better than a fusion. If it bothers me later in life I'll deal with it then. I'd suggest if a fusion could be avoided don't do it. One of my buddies had his right wrist fused couldn't control the throttle well and crashed badly because of it and can't ride at all anymore now with now two fused wrists. Beat of luck to you.

I am 118 days post op for a 4 corner fusion on my left wrist. I had a dead scaphoid bone which was removed entirely, then a bone graft from my hip put in place, and of course the 4 corner fusion. I put up with wrist pain for many years before taking the plunge with this surgery. I have been considering putting up a more in depth post plus before and after pics, as when I was wanting to know more about this surgery I found it a bit hard to find info on other peoples experiences, especially with relation to being able to ride dirt bikes again. i'll try to get around to that post one of these days but if anyone is really wanting to ask any questions feel free to message me

Any info that we all can discuss to get information out there for people suffering from this is extremely useful! About 6 years ago, I had Drs tell me that my pain would get worse until I couldn't take it anymore, and would have to have a complete fusion. I was bone-on-bone with my right scaphoid and the bone in my arm. Worst pain I have ever dealt with. I was willing to try anything and found a guy doing stem cell injections. It took 6-8 months to really take effect, and really taking it easy (NO riding, using wrenches), but it gradually got bette over 2 years to where I am now - maybe about 65-75% of what I feel would be my "100%" . It has lasted far longer than I had hoped for, at this point. I can ride (at a reduced level), and I can be mostly functional, with limitations, at my work (electrician) I would explore all options before getting it fused, as there is no going back! Good luck to all!

Where did you get stem cell injections if I can ask?

I live in San Diego, CA. I got the stem cell injection here. Many others have said it doesn't work, but it worked for me. A small amount of new cartilage regrew and is keeping the bone from rubbing on bone. Insurance won't even consider paying for it. My cost was approximately $3000.

Doctors are the worst trade ever, I have walked out of hospitals 3 times with broken bones they could not diagnose even though I was adamant on 2 occasions that the bones were broken. It wasn’t until the radiologist report came through that I was called back for treatment. 1 broken collarbone, 2 broken wrists.

I have been trail riding with a guy with a fused throttle wrist, I don’t understand how he does it, but he says he is used to it and it doesn’t bother him too much until he falls off with his hand out. Even then he can continue.

If possible, I would really like to see your B+A photos or especially, X-Rays.

Sorry for the hassle.

hey mate, I'll try to do a more detailed post with pictures this weekend. I have plenty of pics of my hand before and after, as well as an x-ray from after the op, but I can't seem to find an x-ray from before the op which really shows just how much of a mess my hand was. I'll try to find it this weekend.

I will drop a name you may or may not now: Steward Baylor.
This guy races for 3 hours in the roughest, most beaten up conditions you can get (GNCC) and wins....had a bone that would not heal actually removed from his wrist years ago. I wanna say it had to be fused after the bone was removed.

does not seem to hold him back
