Obviously there’s a caveat here. This SX season will be the first time since 2011 in which the defending champion was trying to win the championship the next season and won’t end up doing so.
As we know, in 2010, Dungey was the champion and didn’t defend his championship in 2011, falling a few points short. Villopoto won four straight from 2011-2014 and then made no attempt to defend his championship in 2015. Dungey then won three in a row from 2015-2017 and didn’t attempt to defend his championship in 2018.
Now, barring something miraculous, Anderson will not defend his 2018 championship in 2019 after attempting to do so.
8 years. Wow. I think we all kind of took for granted how great those Ryans were. Not an easy thing to do.
