Obviously there’s a caveat here. This SX season will be the first time since 2011 in which the defending champion was trying to win the championship the next season and won’t end up doing so.

As we know, in 2010, Dungey was the champion and didn’t defend his championship in 2011, falling a few points short. Villopoto won four straight from 2011-2014 and then made no attempt to defend his championship in 2015. Dungey then won three in a row from 2015-2017 and didn’t attempt to defend his championship in 2018.

Now, barring something miraculous, Anderson will not defend his 2018 championship in 2019 after attempting to do so.

8 years. Wow. I think we all kind of took for granted how great those Ryans were. Not an easy thing to do.

Dungeys average finish position in his last couple sx seasons are insane....just go back and look at them. Alot of times 1.8 or less.......whaaaaaat.

Okay, I admit it. I'm confused. If RV didn't make an attempt to defend in 2015, and Dungey didn't make an attempt to defend in 2018, isn't this the first time the SX title not be defended since Dungey in 2017?

He's saying it's the first time since 2011 that someone has tried and failed. He's making an exception for not defending due to retirement. I think his whole point is emphasizing how good the Ryan's were.

That’s because he chose to retire and go MXGP Racing. By your logic, Dung also didn’t defend his title in 2018. Can’t defend if you aren’t racing the series.
