Just got a text, Musquin's first moto DNF seems to have been a fuel pump problem...

i remember years ago in what was 500 gp (motogp now) a conrod flew through the cases knocked off the coil , it was an electrical problem ,from the team statement . same as dungey ,was pressing the button wrong in red bud when the bike stopped ."because there was nt anything wrong with the bike" . maybe MM25 bike ,this is what happend . But when these things do . the truth very rarely come out . which is understandable too .

I'm guessing a carb would have seen him to the finish

I sent Michael that text after talking to the guys at KTM. Marvin's bike would run (Frankie fired it up and rode it back to the pits), but it wouldn't rev.

Mechanic has to feel terrible but it's not his fault but he will get a lot of the blame right or wrong. I saw him shed a tear when they cut to him during first moto. Felt super bad for the guy. The mechanics bust ass and have a lot on the line just like the riders...

So how does swapping a motor and wiring harness (im assuming that's what they replaced when they said "electrical" problem) fix a fuel pump issue? isn't the pump in the gas tank?

That was just my satirical remark aimed at all those that were calling BS on an electrical issue saying it dropped a valve but KTM would never admit it. I'm actually surprised there isn't more injector/pump issues with some of the "super fuels" the top teams have access to.

My wife now needs a new fuel pump it seems, thanks for the troubleshoot fellas. She stopped revving recently and I have just been adding diet coke into her fuel tank. Really though this is a buzzkill, my very old Mother texted me at work today letting me know that Marv's bike had flamed out 5 minutes into the first moto and she was bummed.

They swapped the fuel pump/tank as well... Just like Dungey's issue at Glen Helen, it's much safer to change EVERYTHING, rather than risk an issue.

man that sucks, I feel so bad for the guy and wanted to see him win it. I 'll tell ya what, he handled it like a true champion! his future is bright!

Wonder how many KTM guys will have fuel pump issues In their heads today while out hucking the big jumps on the local tracks.

Probably no more than kawi, suzuki, honda, yamaha, husky guys, I would think. Shit happens, I don't think this is a KTM issue only. Just some really shitty luck that could happen to anyone.

I liked how Marvin pushed his own bike all the way off the track himself and kept his composure.
Marvin watched the ship go down the drain and he still acted like a true champ.

99% of the time, kids usually throw a tantrum and leave their bike out on the track. + that's just a 1 race deal when it happens to them.

Isn't a fuel pump a mechanical component though?

It is an electrically powered mechanical device.

Hmm. Seems we're splitting hairs here. None the less, that is a bummer for Marvin.

That's exactly why most of the top teams replace and or clean the injectors and fuel pump every weekend, along with replacing all the seals, as you can imagine.Laughing

Guyb..that sounds like a stator problem and not a fuel pump.

The reality is the top teams change all the electrical components every ten hours, some are changed each race.

Frankie is one of the good guys out there...I'm sure he's absolutely gutted, along with everyone at KTM. The sting from this one won't go away quickly.

Loss of fuel pressure will do that, as it then runs very lean.
Im leaning towards dirty gas cap gets unscrewed, dirt falls into tank, dirt gets sucked into fuel pump as its moving around while moto, pump seizes ="fuel pump malfunction"

I think the Nasty smell of the ETS fuel made the Fuel Pump commit suicide.

I mentioned that because we had a problem on the startline. Bike ran perfect, revved out clean and suddenly acted up when the 15sec board came up. Bike ran but wouldnt rev out...sounded like a limp-mode kicked in. After fault-finding it turned out to be the stator.

I take KTMs word on the fuel pump issue..absolute rotten luck for MM.
