Front Brake Lever on bicycle

Switched rear brake lever on bicycle when I was a kid, over 40 years ago, to left side.

Here in NZ I've never seen a serious mtb with the front brake on the left. Only once or twice on the really cheap bikes from kmart etc.

I do and it led to comedy one time.

Back when, I had just gotten a new mountain bike and went by my friends house to show it off.
This guy was a hot shot in the freestyle BMX scene in the early days and he's out front hanging
with some hot chicks. He wants to check it out so he gets on, goes down the street a little bit, apparently
never touching the brakes, turns around and starts pumping hard.

I'm yelling "Careful! I switched the brakes!!" Too late. He grabs a big handful of what he thought was the
rear brake and just LAUNCHES himself into a pile on the street. Hahahahhahaaaha. Oh man, luckily
he wasn't hurt. We still laugh about that one. Good times.

I no longer Switch & I finally have it down. From my cross country bike to my cross-bike to my Super 73…

Yup, I do, I feel it gives me better control on tight rocky downhills. Years ago I let my buddy ride one of my bikes and I forgot to tell him I switched the brake levers, He tried doing a wheelie while dragging what he thought was the rear brake and he promptly looped out. lol oops

Life is confusing enough without having the levers backwards on my bicycle. Yes, I switch 'em.

I do. My first mtb was a hand-me-down from my father. He has been riding MX/enduro/trials/trails since the early 70’s. He was even a test rider for dirt bike mag back in the day. I’ve been riding and racing MTB since I was a kid and have always had my brakes moto style. I tried to switch to a “normal” bike set up on the last mtb i got and I could hardly ride the damn thing. My balance, technic, and everything was so screwed up it was eye opening. Switched the brakes back and I could ride again.

Basically what I’m saying is that if you start out riding “normal” keep it that way or you’re going to have to learn how to ride your bike again.

I tried it and did not like it. I primarily use the front brake but when I use the rear, corner entrances, corners, or to get control, I need precise control giving confidence. When I swapped I lost confidence because I could not get that precision I had with my left hand that I had with my right so I swapped back.

Yeah I do it's just ingrained in my brain.

When I moved to USA from UK, the first bike I rode was WTF, since all UK bicycled have the front brake on the right.

Always swap them over, even on my kids bikes since they have UK DNA lol

Nope. Tried switching them and brain couldn’t keep up. Different receptacles get plugged in when I’m on a MTB or dirt bike. Lol

Same here, right side = rear brake. Hand or foot. Steep downhill on bike ? Lock up rear and control speed with clutch hand, sort of like on a motorcycle, but different .. Like you said my brain has 2 different modes, pedal mode and motor mode. Switching them was more confusing. If I get an electric mountain bike I’m not sure which way I’ll go ?, I might short circuit

Didn't realise this was a thing for American bicycles (I'm from UK) but the only time I came across this was on a holiday to France as a child. Me and my brother had rented bicycles on the local campsite and made a sweet track that involved doing a 180 degree right around a tree with our step-dads car parked a bit to the left. We thought we'd gotten used to it until my bro came bombing in to the corner and thought he was grabbing a handful of rear brake to pivot round the tree but just immediately locked the front wheel and over the bars he went. Bike went hurtling towards the car and scraped it to shit all the way up the side, I'll never forget how afraid my bro was to tell my step-dad this because at the time he was a scary dude

I find it truly fuckin bizarre that anyone who rides motorcycles would have the front brake on the left, for whatever reason, especially when it’s so damn easy to change it.

They’re sold RHS front here, same as moto, and I could never get how anyone would want it the other way.
