We built a whole new digital experience for reading Racer X Illustrated and are offering a complimentary tryout of the new issue featuring our redesigned cover. Please give it a test run and let me know what you think. We are trying to make the digital version feel more like a traditional magazine reading experience.

Much better- this is the way to go. I actually have a digital subscription but never read it, because moving the screen around to try and read text is too much work, and not a fun way to read.

Major improvement. All the different scrolling and transitioning options make it actually better than a print experience. The scrolling is really clunky in Safari though. It's too bad so many sponsors don't put an emphasis on well designed ads because they really pull you out of the overall great aesthetic in the mag.

I am disappointed to find all this tied to just reading an online version of what I already paid for in print.

KDXGarage: There are laws that require publishers like Racer X to disclose all that. For all the words up there, it really doesn't say a lot that isn't common sense.

If a website asks you for your email address in exchange for something free, assume it will be sold or that you will at least be marketed to by that website.

If you don't want to give away your email, enter something fake. If they need to send confirmation, then create another email account just to use for junk like that.

If you don't want them to know where you live or what device you're browsing their website on, use a browser like Tor.

Looks cool Davey! First page is loading up weird though, saw the whole thing but now white, Roczen gone and the only bit appearing is the Red X. Reloaded and same thing.

What inspired the scrolling vs trying to recreate the magazine thing... ie flicking the pages across like some of the other readers?

Fuck there is some horrendous photoshopping going on in the 100% ad!

I like it. I feel like it is laid out well and easy to read. The one thing I will say is I used the touch screen on my laptop thinking it would give a more normal feel to reading it. Whilst I like the fact the adverts are active, i.e. you can click them and get to the company advertising (if we have to have adverts at all) using the touch screen as I scrolled through I kept getting sent to other sites from my touch that I didn't want.

Might be better on an ipad maybe...

Hey DC is there any improvement on getting the new mag down under in a slightly quicker time frame. We don't see the hard copy mag until around a month after its released in the states.
Magazines struggle to keep up with the news as it is and it's a bit of a turn off forking out for a magazine that's already so far behind when it hits our shores.

Just a thought

With digital being a much quicker delivery, why would the issue released in early March still be sold as the "May 2019" edition?

The scrolling seems more convenient and has a seemless manner. The font size is easy on my aging eyes and the content has always carried my attention. I like it but must say I will always miss print when the time comes.

Thanks for posting the link! Here’s a few thoughts from iPhone 7.

-Its really cool getting this more refined content then what’s sometimes slapped together to be posted online.

-I felt a bit lost sometimes not understanding where an ad ends, article starts or the next ad is. Especially when considering the “learn more”. Am I clicking on an ad or learning more about an article.

-there are no page numbers so I had no idea how far down I am.

-I like that you can click on the contents and jump right to the article

-hard to get back to the start or contents when your deep in the the middle.

-For example with Pings How To, it would be cool if there was also a video clip that looped. The photog was out there, maybe they have the ability to get a quick video.

All and all I really appreciate this and I would view them if this was available. After the whole Transworld deal we need to support the rest of the mags, creators and industry more. I’m guilty and watched it fall down without subscribing and supporting.

I agree with your 2nd point

"I felt a bit lost sometimes not understanding where an ad ends, article starts or the next ad is. Especially when considering the “learn more”. Am I clicking on an ad or learning more about an article."

I too felt the same way. What's an ad vs article is tough at first.

I also think a page count/percentage read through would be nice but not a deal breaker to me. An easier way to show how far you are along (other than page numbers) would be to show a scroll bar on either side of the screen but you would be stealing screen space to do so.

The first thing I do with a print rag is start tearing out the massive multi page ad inserts so I don't have to flip through them. Can't do that with digital.

I agree, the amount of work has to be taxing but seeing this and having DC post the free version is a great start. The mags need to evolve or we will see what happened to TW.

I worked at Transworld Snow 2008-2012ish and our art directors were working with the guys from Popular Science(we were owned by the same company at the time) to develop a full interactive iPad mag for every issue. Some features they had were photos coming to life in video form, video ads, interviews also having the raw video to watch, ect ect. It was wayyyy ahead of its time 8 years ago.

Now that everyone has a larger phone and some kind of tablet, this is a great way to reinvent the wheel and still get eyeballs on the product.

Very smart to push the digital magazine. While I do still enjoy a physical copy, the world is on the web.

Just as a side note, you should incorporate this type of interaction into the site. It has set scroll points to improve the interaction for the user. It helps to maintain "spreads" like you would typically see in the magazine.

https://alvarotrigo.com/fullPage/

Whatever you do, don't go to the magazine turning page style animation..it does nothing. And don't be afraid to embrace the tool of the web in the digital copy. No reason you can't integrate some audio/video or other interactions. With print you had limitations. With the web the possibilities are endless.

Also, digging the clean cover and rendition of the RacerX logo.

This is for newsstand purposes. The magazine sits on the newsstand for a certain amount of time, so we have to be ahead with the dates. Otherwise it would go out of date on the newsstand. It has no effect on the content of the magazine though.

Yeah because killing more trees is fun! Please consider changing your long term vision.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_impact_of_paper

Discarded paper and paperboard make up roughly 26% (or 67 million tons) of the 258 million tons of solid municipal waste generated in 2014 and over 14% of the 136 million tons solid municipal waste that ended up in landfills in 2014.[7] Paper waste, like other wastes, faces the additional hazard of toxic inks, dyes and polymers that could be potentially carcinogenic when incinerated, or commingled with groundwater via traditional burial methods such as modern landfills. Paper recycling mitigates this impact, but not the environmental and economic impact of the energy consumed by manufacturing, transporting and burying and or reprocessing paper products.

I would imagine (and hope) that this new experience is a service offered by their publisher or a third party that goes hand in hand with the print preparation.

You should go to China and India with your concerns. They do a little polluting that someone like you could really make a big difference on.

I do not discard the magazines. I save them.

I honestly wonder how kids like you can ride a dirt bike (assuming you do) and then get so upset about print and other such concerns.

That's why Inside Motocross filtered their advertising to enhance the essence of how they wanted the magazine to look. Otherwise it would have looked like Playboy magazine with Hustler advertising. Laughing
