You have pics? I am down the rabbit hole. This thing don't look so bad once I strip it down. Engine came out a helluva lot easier than my 2004. These bikes are so simple to work on. I think it has stock bars, tires and air filter still.

Hope you don't find what I found once the tires came off. Both wheels had severe intergranular corrosion underneath the duct tape the last guy applied. Both my 87s were like that. Only the hubs were salvageable. Almost a thousand dollars later, I have nice wheels now with a fresh set of MX33s mounted up.

Squirt it with a little PB Blaster. Should fire right up.
Typical ad for bike in that condition, "runs on spray, may need carb cleaning"

It's an aftermarket Acerbis fender, painted white. Someone was ahead of Pastrana with the white RM. The side panel is original- it was yellow originally, painted white, then painted yellow again on top of that. Hideous. Front plate is aftermarket Acerbis, but plastic is gone now.

Until you actually restore one of these good luck. Bought a 86 rm 125 for 300 bucks on the original piston. You will never believe what rust and a idiot that thinks he can work on these can do.

Could be worse...it's a bike, not a side chick. Wife would be orders of magnitude less pumped to see that Silly

That. bike doesn't have much time on it. Looks like someone poured straight gas in it, blew it up and let it sit for three decades. Looks like the stock rear sprocket too. Pegs are straight and wear is pretty minimal on the cases. Perfect candidate for an all OEM restore....... Wink

Amen...my 87 RM 125 had so many issues from the previous owners “mechanical ineptitude “ I”m shocked he ever got it to run...

Did you get the swingarm bolt out already? They were frozen solid in 1983, no way that came out that easy....

Yep, the swingarm bolt came right out. Ironically, the swingarm bolt on my 2004 was stuck for weeks.
So far on the '82, a side panel bolt broke off and I am having trouble with the clutch cover, which is held on with phillips screws.

Get a good JIS screwdriver or JIS bit for the impact to remove case screws. I've done a couple of 40 yr+ engines and the impact and correct JIS bit makes quick work of them. A little heat helps also.
I had an '83 and it was a light switch turd of an engine. From reading this thread, it sounds like the 82 had a good motor, amazing how they could take a step backwards like that in one year.

I could spend a couple of hours just looking at those! The '82 RM is the perfect mix of 80s funkiness and futurism. I gotta build this bike, it's really down to convincing my wife.
Luckily it's my 52nd birthday this month so there is a chance I can convince her to let me spend money on myself. I mentioned to her that I could part it out (the sensible thing to do) and she said "why not have two bikes?"
If she only knew the glee and head-spinning in my mind, when she said those words...I played it off- "yeah, I was thinking about it." Grinning (I already have a spread sheet going of the parts I need).

As I research this topic, this man is my hero, my guide, my mentor. I leave you with this, as I journey back in time when Ronald Reagan was president and you could be the man in A class with a $1700 bike. The build is on.
I got the Eye of the Tiger, to use the parlance of the time!

Safety seat, good foam, cover & usable base, missing bracket...it’s dirty, stenciling a little worn, The tank is complete with cap & petcock, needs the normal sanding to bring the shine back...Still trying to figure out how to get photo of tank from email to iPad photos 😭 ...50.00 for both seat & tank, you cover shipping...

I hate to have you go to the trouble for nothing- but the yellow RM on the seat is pretty critical for the look of this bike. Can it be re-stenciled? Also the safety seat isn't OEM, but I plan to ride or race this bike so I'm not being crazy about , having it OEM, but want as much as possible. The riding position is cramped- the whole bike feels tiny and I'm tall so the safety seat might be a possibility. I'll take a look at the tank and this about this seat.
