Sweet pics Rupe! I always forget Larocco rode the 450 the last few nationals that year.

Epic race, hope Matthes and Weege do a re-raceables on it

Proper bikes, proper racing and if watching on TV, proper commentators/commentary. The best days of mx right then.

Someone remind me why RC dropped back to the 125 for that day- was it to beat Barnett’s national win record??

Why wouldn’t the factory Kawi team dress up a bike (even a PC bike) in the factory livery for him to race? Let’s face it Kawasaki we’re funding pretty much most of the PC outfit anyway.

Can someone post the results of the day please?
125

RC 3-1
Brown 1-3
Langston 2-DNF
**Note Brown slowed down to let Jesseman pass him after Langstons wheel issues, thus giving RC the overall too.

250

KW 1-1

What a day of racing that was!!

Totally gutted for Langston when that wheel came apart.

Because before Bubba came along PC was the official Kawi 125 team.

They still were after bubba, but he was the exception

DC: Langston asked Ricky 'How are you gonna play this?' and Ricky said 'Don't worry Grant, when I pass you, I won't even touch you'..

Haha classic (That might not be verbatim haha)

I'm standing there at Steel City during that moto- my buddy and I drove up from Virginia.
He turns to me as Langston has the lead- "I guess Langston has it, unless his bike breaks."
Me, slowly taking a sip from my beer: "Stranger things have happened." Woohoo

I always felt pretty psychic about that one...

I was standing near the finish. Had a direct line of sight to watch that wheel come apart.

First of several Steel City trips from Florida with my son. Great memories. We were right in front of watching Ricky trying to break records and also watching Langstons wheel blow out. It was heart wrenching and elation all at the same time. My son and I still talk about this very memorable trip.

Super cool pictures. My dad, uncle, and I drove up toto steel city from VA in I think 04/05/06 I can't remember which but we were in Racer X on the contents page. Pretty cool...pretty mad at myself for losing that magazine.

Loved that race.

Bet last thing Roger was thinking looking at that rim on that ktm was that he would be the team manger for factory ktm 9 years later and they would win multiple Ama championship under his management . Pretty sure that Langston first year here was the first factory ktm team in America year ?

I was there Friday and Saturday racing amateur day. I got crossed up on a double on Saturday’s race and broke my tibia. Got to watch the race in a wheelchair. It was a great trip!

I grew up about 20 minutes from the Steel City track. I hit just about every National and even the 125 GP round (88 maybe?). That was a great track and loved the racing there. Sad that it is now pasture land.

I was there that day. I grew up about 15 minutes away and the morning of Steel City 2001 I guess my dad heard that there was a big race. We showed up mid day having no clue how big it would be, had to park a mile away on the main road and walk in. I'm pretty sure we missed the first motos, and watched the second motos just above the table top section on the hill.

We had always ridden in fields on my dad's old XR75s and MR50s but this got us hooked on racing. The next year Dad got me a KTM 65 and we started racing district 5. I believe we didn't miss a national from 01-08. Good times, I wish that track were still around.

Would be nice to have a track or 2 prepped like that with no slot car racing ruts to see if provided better racing/passing

Steel city was a sick track and it did have great viewing. Raced amateur day there in 1999 and 2000. But for the best viewing track I’d have to say Binghamton was tough to beat. You could see about %90 of the track from any vantage point
