looks like fly has new boots. Would they be closer to tech 5 s or tech 7s?

They replace the Maverick. That should tell you about where they place.

In terms of relations to Astars. Think lower than a tech 1.

I just spent a week riding in Colorado with the new FR5 boot. My previous boots were an older Tech 7. I put about 10 minutes on the boots before I left town and after wearing them I am impressed. Very comfortable and no break in time. Buckles are easy to use going on and coming off. I have a wide toe box and these things fit great. If I had to have a complaint it would be that they can be a little squeaky walking in them. Only having a week of riding time in them I can not talk about wear or how they will hold up but these things will last me a long time. For the price, I don't see how you can beat them.

Not even comparable to the Maverick.

They are about as comparable to the 7 as you can get.

I'd say on par through and through
