Some of you guys may have seen my other thread, but I'm in the market for a new helmet after taking a decent hit to the noggin.

I can't afford something like a shoei or 6d at the moment. I'm thinking I might go with a Fly F2 Carbon, or a Fox v3.

How would you guys compare the safety quality of the Fly F2 and Fox to that of a Shoei, or Arai etc.. Do you think the chances of concussion are the same regardless since they all pass standards? I understand no helmet can prevent a concussion, but is there a significant difference in safety between say a $200 Fly F2 and $500 Shoei?

Thanks!

I have a couple Fly F2's. Im not gonna pretend to be a helmet expert, but the quality is really good for how much you can get them for (Ive seen them closeout for $180 on RMATV). Ive heard they come from the same factory as the Fox helmets, and they are a Carbon/kevlar shell. Im pretty sure Im gonna stay with them for a while due to the price point and that there are plenty of factory guys that trust their heads in them.

Im not some Fly employee or something by the way

My thought has always been this: (sorry, I haven't read your other topic) Buy the helmet that you can, or will be willing to, replace when it needs to be replaced. I feel like 2-3 $200 helmets is safer than 1 $500 helmet that has been through too much, but you can't replace it.

I disagree. Search the internet until you find a leftover premium brand helmet at a blowout price. Shoei will be coming out with a new model in a year or less, so their (current) VFX-W model should be getting some good discounts. If you can't afford it, save up until you can. Also look for the older Arai model (VX-3), maybe some shops still have a few of those at good prices.

I've heard helmet experts say that's a big no. A helmet lifespan is 5-8 years used or not.

By leftover I mean 1 year old, 2 year max. That leaves at least 3 years if you are ultra-cautious. I've run my vfx-w for 6 years now and am on the verge of buying a 6D.

If you can afford to ride dirtbikes, you can afford to buy a $300 year-old Shoei, that is my opinion.

Just make sure the company selling it has a good return policy. When you get the helmet check the date inside the helmet. If it's all sales final, see if they are wiling to verify the date in the helmet you are getting. I buy all mine on clearance around the 350 range. The shoei fits me great, looking forward to the new helmet

i just bought a 16 shoei for $390 from a local dealer. just go in and talk to them, they may make you a deal.

I was looking at the Bells, and started asking questions to the dude there, and happened to ask how the shoei's are selling. He looked at me and said "their not, lm trying to move them, find a color you like" BOOM. done deal!

This site is from the uk, and they have tested most all helmet manufacturers products.

http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/

Its mostly for street helmets, although some dual Sport helmets are listed. If you look through the results, you'll find Shoei and Arai test just like anything else. As they should since they use the same technology .

If either were truly "more safe", dont you think we'd have proof? That 6d is worth a look. Its actually different.

I cant help but wonder where the proof is. If I were selling products that cost twice as much, Id for sure have something solid to back up my claims of being "better".

My boy had 3 f2 carbons, got his real bad concussion in 1, so now he rotates 2. the 3rd hangs in his room as a "trophy" . I has always been a firm believer in get a few in the rotation.

Any helmet will protect you and any helmet can give you a concussion. Cheap helmets are usually heavy, bad airflow, and ugly looking. Mid-range helmets (like the fly f2 for example) are perfectly save, for most people comfortable and pretty good looking. High-price helmets usually look better (except for the 6d) usually a little better airflow, maybe some better visor adjustments and options and some like the Airoh are really light, but they will give you the same concussion that a Fly F2 will give you.

My last helmet was an Arai, and my current helmet is a Shoei. I'd recommend those two all day long, if you can get a deal on one then you're set.
