Had a bike that started running really poor during a recent event. After initially thinking it was the reeds, I took the carb apart expecting a clogged jet. Sure enough - it was clogged...

I have never seen that. However I would be going nuts looking for the clip that was on that needle. :-0

slide slammed shut off throttle, tip of the needle missed the main jet, hit the bottom of the carb body and cracked. if it were me, i'd look at the slide itself and see how the needle fits. probably pretty loosely.

Didn't that happen to McGrath once? Definitely a freak failure!

Yes, I have seen it happen a few times. It WILL happen if you are using a Yamaha spring loaded cable holder in any other OEM's slide. Yamaha has Keihin drill the hole for the needle jet at a different offset than any of the other OEM's, which will cause the needle to fit to tightly in other oem's slide. The Yamaha slides are specifically marked with an S on the TPS tab and should only be use with a Yamaha spring loaded cable holder. You may be able to get away with using a Keihin brass single taper needle but I wouldn't push it.
