Those were spec tires, ridden 1 time by one of the factory guys. They cut the bead so nobody takes them and tries to ride with them. There are mountains of these tires in Grove City at Gear's warehouse. A truly sad sight...

Crazy wasteful though, plenty of privateers would find a good use for them even if it’s just for practice laps

Totally! It comes down to it being so much lighter and softer, it is not made to be ridden more than an hour or so. So to prevent a catastrophic failure from a normal consumer they make it unusable.
