What's the deal with drones this summer? I can just imagine some drunk fan crashing a drone into Dungey's face as he's leading moto 1 at Glen Helen.

I say YES because it would give a chance for fans to see even more footage of the nats.

I think they're talking about fans with drones. That would never end well

The question came up at a local rally cross event. The answer was NO, HELL NO.
In fact they have to stop the race if somebody flies a drone overhead. This is an SCCA rule, (sports car club of America)

The FCC has some new and fairly loose guidelines.
http://www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?newsId=18295

So ultimately, the licensing body, and the event organizer have the final word.
My vote is NO, HELL NO. The riders take enough risks as it is without having some flying objects distracting them.

Fans ? I'd say no. Regulated professionals who work with this things allot ? Yes.
I've seen some amateur use of it around on youtube and it definitly can give interesting beautifull shots that would enhance the whole tv / stream experience.
Random (drunk) people operating those to get some shots in for themselves .. I don't know some dramatic things could happen i guess ...

If a TV Producers drone crashed into a fan, the lawsuits would end this sport.

If it crashed into a racer, they would have to forfeit that whole race(that Class) for money points you name it and pretend that race for that class was simply cancelled.

Doubt any drunk person is going to fly a $20,000 drone.

Screw the drone, I want to see a cable cam run up the mountain that covers the climb and descent all in one motion.

Indeed.

To my knowledge "drones" have caused ZERO fatalities or major injuries, motocross bikes on the other hand...

Just be thankful the media is not condemning 2 wheels as much as 4 rotors. At the moment anyway.

But seriously personal "drone" use at a race is a bad idea, use for tv production is a very very very good idea.

Hard to believe they would actually consider this for fan use.

The larger multi-roters that carry DSLRs, REDs, or a Sony FS700 can cost that much or more.

Huh, ive flown my personal "drone" at quite a few races with no issues. I happened to be sober however. Somehow i doubt anyone who spends the $2k or so on a decent setup is going to be flying it around shitfaced. Feel free to make up wildly stupid scenarios though........

I thought Julienne Fries was the new Swiss rider on the Pro-Circuit team.

I've seen a couple at Nationals, but for the most part it has been a non-issue.

I was just talking about this the other day with a friend, I think if the networks used this technology to their advantage they could take the coverage of the "Great Outdoors" to a whole new level?

I am not sure how to police the private use of them, but I would think the commercial use of them for the coverage of the races would have to be huge for the sport? I have no idea, I know very little about those contraptions. Just thinking out loud.

There are also lots of powerlines at a lot of the National tracks.

What about mounting an aerial camera from a large balloon or some shit?

Would be held cool to have the "spider cam" at the Nationals.

Yea, that's a good point. Implementing the drones would be easier said than done.

You figured out how to attach a D4 to one yet?

Solution is easy. It is called a shotgun.
Law Enforcement personnel are at every Nat. Easy enough. Have them do it.

That dos sound fun as hell. Not because I have some agenda against drones. Just looks like it would be fun as hell to shoot one of those out of the air with some 3 1/2" magnums
