Remember Donny "Holeshot" Hansen? Great starter. Mike Allessi is also a master at holeshots. Perhaps better. When he retires he should be hired by teams to teach starts. Just an idea.

Difference is what you do after you get the holeshot.

You mean the Hansen that wasn't afraid to race Motocross? Yeah, I remember... A few other great starters out there... Gary Semics... Tom Carson...

"Just an idea", eh?

I have an "idea", too. Mike is about 150 lbs. That might have something to do with it. Just an idea.

150 lbs is a pretty average SX riders weight. Most are 165 ish.
I think the weight is a non issue and it's just great technique.

I don't know what it is, but I would guess he does something right. I have said for years, he would make more money teaching others how to do it. The guy is just amazing at it.

Actually, Alessi is more around 160. He weighs more than half the guys on the line. He's ALWAYS been a start in the front guy. You can't really teach timing..,

^^ all riders bios in there. A couple years old, but a good reference for the other riders.

When you're little, you get holeshots.

Baggett probably weighs 130 soaking wet. I don't think weight has much to do with it. Its all technique.

You do realize he's been racing pro since 2004, of which he was on the podium in his second pro race at the age of 16, he raced his 100th main last Saturday in SD, he's has made millions of dollars racing and if that isn't enough he is a FIVE time vice champion of the 250 and 450 class. And of course a couple of those years that he finished second, he probably could of and should of won the championship.

I would say that's doing something after the holeshot!!

Let me guess, you think winning a championship is the only criteria for a successful career?

Is Donny going to be the name Tony names his new baby? I'm sure he knows all the mistake he made with Mike & Jeff. He can build a super human this time! J/k

This. Put Brandon on a GSXR1000 and he wouldn't holeshot.

I asked DV on twitter once what it was that made Mike so good at starts. He replied that his reaction and shift timing is perfect. Maybe he will chime in.

Wyman Priddy (Kawasaki, Texas) managed to see more than his share of unobstructed first turns.

Alessi was never a good starter, like Hansen, Semics, or Emig. He just managed to time the gate, by watching previous races and relying on tendencies of whoever dropped the gate. Humans are predictable...ya know.

Doesn't that make him a good starter?
