Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen.

As I spent some time around the board I came to notice, that there's a lot of guys who go through a lot of different bikes over years, therefore I seek your advice.
I currently have an 07 rmz 250, which is stock, engine rebuilt recently, going through transmission right now. It's a cool bike and it's fun to ride, but I wrench it more than I ride it recently and I grew tired of this particular bike. I don't mind wrenching in fact I like it but there's just no more love in this relationship. Had this bike since 2013, didn't ride much (approx 100 hours) but I can manage the power just fine, sometimes I feel like I could actually use some more. I don't want to buy another old 250f to pur money into it non-stop, cannot afford a new one at the moment, but also would never ever choose to sit out a season without a bike, which led me to think about getting myself a 2 stroke. Also I have heard that 2 strokes make you a better rider.

I rode a friends 03 YZ 125 and enjoyed it A LOT. The bike screamed and screamed and I felt like doing mach 3 speed, but then I looked down and it turned out I was barely moving... Smile Lots of fun, other then it was a little slow for my taste. It required lots of clutching. On the other hand, I can't help feeling that a 250 smoker will kill me first chance it gets.
Physical background, as it might matter when it comes to bike choice: 178cm height, 70kgs. In shape.

Here goes the big question, should I go for a 125 or 250 2 stroke?
I will be racing the next bike I get, but in the race series that has no displacement limits. You can race a 125 against 250's and 450's. I want the bike that is reliable (I stay on top of maintenance) and fun. I have never ridden a 250 2-stroke. Top of my list would be suzukis, because I love the way they handle, but it's not a deciding factor. MX only.

Sorry for the long post, appreciate the input.

I went through the same experience and got a 2007 rm250 love it it's light has more power than I need at 43 years of age it has never let me down. You can puck them up cheap and parts are easy to come by. I've had it 2 years and done the top end twice other than that just general matinence.
Good luck what ever you decide to do

Sounds like you want a 250 two stroke, they don't make that much more power than a 250f so you'll soon get used to it.

Depends if you want to be competitive while racing. Fun factor get the 125. If you want to win, get the 250.

The newer 125s make way more power than the 2003 you rode. I'm really impressed with the 2016 KTM 125.

I rode a 2013 KTM 125SX but didn't like the bike at all. Not sure why but I rode the two back to back and figured the YZ is way better, even though it's much older. Yes, the KTM had better power (especially down low) but YZ felt more natural, better ergos and I just felt good on it, while on KTM it was really awkward. Also, on the KTM I had a crash when I overjumped a really small tabletop and the forks pretty much collapsed on me. Felt like there was no bottoming resistance at all, but maybe something was wrong with those forks.

Get both! I have been riding a 03 CR 250 for a few years after getting rid of my 450. I love it but 125s a crazy fun. I am on the hunt for a YZ 125 as we speak.

If your trying NOT to work on the bike get the 250. The 125 will have to have 3 top ends for every 1 on the 250.

Agree. Go for a 250, they arnt widow makers like people make them out to be. My old 08 rm 250 was a good bike, handling good, notorious for head shake. But you'll have a blast riding it. They fetch good money for what they are though.

This thread has me convinced that I also need a 250 2 stroke

Riding a 12 kx250f now I love it to death but I have just really always missed 2 strokes

Same here I have 16 crf450 that does everything perfect and yet here I am drooling over YZ125s on eBay.

Side note, anybody got any experience with the GYTR kits for them?

Flywheel weight will take care of the hit. Mine almost doesn't have enough hit with an 11oz. on it. It almost rides like a 4-stroke.

Something about holding a smoker wide open around the outside of a berm just makes me harder than a diamond in an ice storm

They are both super fun but I think a 250 2-stroke is an awesome do-it-all bike. Right now I have a 125 only, I love them to death but it's frustrating when you just want to pass people and you have half the horsepower haha.

Another great two stroke thread. I got back into riding about 5 years ago after a long break. I decided that I wanted the 125 again so I can become a better all around rider and its worked for me. My first reaction when not being able to keep up with a bigger bike is damn, I want a 250 now.

Then I think about it and realize I could be braking later, carrying more momentum, and getting on the gas sooner while really pressing on that outside peg. This is why I love the 125, you gotta do things right to go fast and it feels so damn badass when you start putting it together!

Then apply those fundamentals to a 250 smoker and you are gonna be hauling the mail.

Very true, and I agree. I was at Cahuilla mx this weekend and it was way busy and way bumpy, it's compounded when you're at a sandy/hilly/bumpy track but it's still fun.

I find myself pushing so hard on the 125 trying to catch guys. I won't be pulling holeys on it, but as long as I'm going forward in the race I'm good with it. At 39 I just like to race and battle. My plan is to race the 125 this year and build some strength and hopefully get on a 250 next year. We'll see how it goes, I'd love to get on a 250 just for the simple fact of jumping. There are some jumps around here that I just can't do on a 125, at least not without being blind folded and ripping the slide out of the carb!

I never really enjoyed riding a 125 and neither a 250f. I switched over to a 250 sx after a lot of frustrations with my 250f. The switch really brought the joy back in racing again for me and now I smile while racing instead of getting frustrated with my bike.

I know that it depends on the person, just thought I give my perspective. I'd choose the 250 2 stroke, very fun to ride, it rips, easy to throw around and able to huck massive jumps. Tongue

I love my 125, but I could not imagine having it as my only bike. If you are just going to have one bike I would get a 250. You can shred a moto track one day and take it on tight single track the next. 250 smokers also require a lot less maintenance compared to a 125.

Another vote for the 250. They are such great do it all bikes and are pretty low maintenance. And honestly, get a YZ250. Parts are cheap and everyone makes stuff for it. Excellent handling and suspension. Really hard to go wrong. Yeah the new KTM has a couple more ponies and is a few pounds lighter, but the Yamaha is the better overall machine for the average guy IMO.

Is an 05-07 RM250 a better machine compared to the YZ250s of the last 10 years?

Depends on what you like. I personally hate the way YZ 250's feel. Engines are always solid, but the ergonomics are no where near my liking. RM's are good bikes, tranny parts are pricey and there is not as big of an aftermarket compared to the YZ. I love the last gen Kawasaki kx 250 (have an 06 250 and 03 125). The 06 and 07 Kawi 250's are great bikes. If you can afford a new KTM 250/300 that is your best bet...

In my opinion, no. The only thing they do better than the other 250's is turn in. But people like different things in bikes based on their skill, size, and how they ride it. I also am not a fan of the KX250. A friend of mine has one and he prefers the Yamaha as well.

Before I bought my YZ250 I had an 09 KTM 250SX. Almost bought a new one instead of the YZ, but I wanted the better suspension on the Yamaha.

If you have the chance, ride a few and see which you like best.

That 07 rmz 250f is a pos. Try a 14 ktm or yamaha. Night and day. Or get a 250. 125 is fun to ride but easy to come up short.

Agreed on easy to come up short. I almost killed myself on a couple uphill doubles on my last 125. I know that is not a problem for faster guys, but some jumps are tougher on a 125 when you are a 49 years old and ride once a month. I have a 2 stroke 250 now.

I was thinking the same thing for the 250. Also, a longer silencer will make the bike a bit more tame.

All that being given said....I'm going with the 125 this year myself. I feel like I can cut more consistent laps on it while remaining aggressive as opposed to a 250.

250 2t all day if you are going 2 stroke. I'm saving for a new bike and getting my 125 ready for this season. I sold my YZ250 last summer and I regret it now that I have to save for a new bike. That's my own fault. That being said Im excited to ride the 125 again but cant wait to get a new bike due to the fact that Ill be the only one in my large group of 250f and 450f's with a 125.

The newer 125s make way more power than the 2003 you rode. I'm really impressed with the 2016 KTM 125.
Not to de-rail this thread, but I've always wondered where this comes from. I've ridden 2 stroke and 4 strokes and a 450F is far away the most fun bike I've ever ridden. I ask this because I've seen many people say "get a 125 for the fun factor". I'm just curious.

If you're not a two stroke guy then you won't get it.

I currently have a 2016 crf450 in my garage which does everything absolutely perfectly for me. I also have a 1998 CR250 (currently in a million and one pieces), the 98 CR250 has a horrible reputation, the chassis transmits every single part of the track to your wrists.

On a good dry day I honestly prefer the 98. It's just fun there's no other way to describe the bike.

That said if I'm riding a wet sloppy track or I'm racing the 450 gets the vote every time.

I had an 07 rm250 and now a 2010 yz250. Ergonomically they feel very similar to me, both comfortable. I hated the feel of the older yz's though, they felt high in the front end.
Engine wise I feel the yz250 is smoother, the rm250 is snappier
Yz250 feels more stable and has better suspension (sss). Valved and sprung for my weight the rm250 still wasn't as good as my yz250 stock
I also feel the yz250 is built a little better. Just small things that add up to a more solid feeling bike.
Mxa did a test in 2008 of the yz, rm, and sx and I pretty much agree with everything they said.
I also rate my yz over the 12 ktm 250sx I had too
