Like the title says, does a new engine hurt the value of a bike? I’ve a 17.5 Factory Edition 450SXF that has 56 hours on the bike overall, with 13 hours on a new engine. The bike had a rod failure at the 43 hour mark and KTM took care of it, with Woodstock KTM doing the warranty work. It’s a well-documented story, as I posted the engine failure on here within a half hour of it happening to see if anyone had an idea what may have caused it.

People seem to be freaked out by this and say it kills the value, which I’m not seeing. I don’t think it raises the value, but I certainly don’t see it hurting it. It was a freak thing that KTM took care of and the work was done at a dealer. IMO, I’d rather that than Joe down the street rebuilding it in his garage.
I’m looking to trade the bike, as I’m not a 450 guy. I’m looking to potentially trade it for a 2018 150SX or a 2018 350SXF (bikes I enjoy more...and the important-to-me orange frame). I’ve found a guy with a 2017 350SXF that has 40 hours on the bike and claims it has a new top end. He feels the two bikes are valued the same. I don’t see it that way. The two bikes appear to be in similar condition physically and are stock. The 450 is a year (or .5 if looked at that way) newer and has a $1,200 higher retail, along with the attraction of being a Factory Edition. I see the ‘17.5 450, with those things, as being worth somewhere around $1,000-$1,200 higher than the ‘17 350.
What are your thoughts?

The only way it would drop the value if i can see that the bike has been with a horrible owner and it is obvious that the maintenance has been lacking.
The Shop
Edited to add that I'm speaking of cars. Don't think it should hurt resale at all in this case.
Now a "rebuilt" engine on the other hand kills the value for me. Who knows what kind of inbred was in it at that point...

But i think the bigger thing that nobody has mentioned is that you said you specifically value the orange frame and unless he already had it stripped down and powder coated, the 2017 350 will not have that.
As to the 8.5 hour drive (Each way) I’d laugh in his face. Meet halfway at best or no deal.
