Like the title says, does a new engine hurt the value of a bike? I’ve a 17.5 Factory Edition 450SXF that has 56 hours on the bike overall, with 13 hours on a new engine. The bike had a rod failure at the 43 hour mark and KTM took care of it, with Woodstock KTM doing the warranty work. It’s a well-documented story, as I posted the engine failure on here within a half hour of it happening to see if anyone had an idea what may have caused it.

Here’s the link to the thread. https://m.vitalmx.com/forums/Moto-Related,20/Windowd-KTM-engine,1327145

People seem to be freaked out by this and say it kills the value, which I’m not seeing. I don’t think it raises the value, but I certainly don’t see it hurting it. It was a freak thing that KTM took care of and the work was done at a dealer. IMO, I’d rather that than Joe down the street rebuilding it in his garage.

I’m looking to trade the bike, as I’m not a 450 guy. I’m looking to potentially trade it for a 2018 150SX or a 2018 350SXF (bikes I enjoy more...and the important-to-me orange frame). I’ve found a guy with a 2017 350SXF that has 40 hours on the bike and claims it has a new top end. He feels the two bikes are valued the same. I don’t see it that way. The two bikes appear to be in similar condition physically and are stock. The 450 is a year (or .5 if looked at that way) newer and has a $1,200 higher retail, along with the attraction of being a Factory Edition. I see the ‘17.5 450, with those things, as being worth somewhere around $1,000-$1,200 higher than the ‘17 350.

What are your thoughts?

For me, that would not do anything to the value.

The only way it would drop the value if i can see that the bike has been with a horrible owner and it is obvious that the maintenance has been lacking.

Thanks. I’m just wondering if I’m blind to any value change since it’s my bike.

I don't see it decreasing the value at all . The 450 is worth more than the 350 all day IMHO I like the orange frame also

Doesnt hurt value. If it were a car or street bike, it would. But low hour motors on dirtbikes are actually saught after.

Probably saying the engine failed is what's hurting your value, I would word it fresh top end leave it at that. Sometimes offering up too much information doesn't help sell something.

Curious why it would hurt value on a car or street bike, if the new engine was installed at a dealership?

My kid recently had an engine in his truck fail was fixed by the dealer failed again in an hour had to be replaced with a new engine. Just because it was done by a dealer doesn't mean it was done right.

If the work was done at the dealer and it's documented, it definitely wouldn't impact my opinion of the value. That being said, of course a bike with 13 hours on a rebuild isn't going to have the same value as a bike with only 13 hours.

Leads you to believe the vehicle wasnt taken care of. As someone else mentioned, who knows if it was even done correctly.

Totally agree. I'd rather have the vehicle as it came off the assembly line over a vehicle that had the engine replaced by some hack mechanic. There are lots of good technicians out there, but there's probably more that I wouldn't want touching anything I own. I repair everything myself. Fortunately haven't came across anything yet that couldn't be fixed in my garage.

Edited to add that I'm speaking of cars. Don't think it should hurt resale at all in this case.

The fact is was done by a dealer with a NEW engine from KTM doesn't hurt the value IMO.

Now a "rebuilt" engine on the other hand kills the value for me. Who knows what kind of inbred was in it at that point...

Not every part is 'new' when the motor is 'rebuilt', so, that has nothing to do with it. The bike as a whole has the hours, some parts are newer, the, the grips? Oh, and some parts in the motor.

A 17.5 factory edition 450 is absolutely worth more than a 17 350. Id say 500 on top would be fair for both. Roughly half the difference from retail.

I get it, but man, I really like to be super honest and detailed about things. I don’t like to leave things out. If I’m a buyer, I’d prefer to know everything about the history of at all possible. Maybe I’m alone with that thought.

He has now offered $500 to boot, but I’d have to drive 8.5 hours each way to do it. To me, that’s just a straight up trade after my time and fuel are factored in, provided my time isn’t worth much.

I understand you want to be honest ,if you feel the engine was repaired properly there's no need to go into further detail unless they ask you why you rebuilt it. I'm willing to bet the guy you're looking to trade with wouldn't tell you if there was anything wrong with his bike. The fact that his bike has a new top at 40 hours would make me suspicious a 350 can go easily 100 hours on piston. If you wanted 18 hold out till you get what you want, your bike is worth an even trade for an 18 350.

If the complete motor was replaced, it's just tire kicker bullshit. For you guys that don't believe anybody when they tell you "fresh top end" or you don't trust anybody to touch your stuff, are you offended if I don't believe you or trust YOUR mechanical skills when you go to sell your bike.

I don't believe he got a brand new engine just the parts to fix his. Even when KTM send you a new engine most likely you're getting a rebuilt engine that somebody else has returned. I worked at a KTM dealership we got a new engine for one of their SX quads, install the engine hit the start button 15 seconds later engine starts rapping shuts off. I had to pull back out return for another engine. the first engine they sent us somebody left a washer laying in the bottom end.

Gotcha. I don’t disagree, was thinking more of the 95% of the public who think that car dealers are the experts when it comes to maintenance on their newer vehicles (a category I am certainly not in...).

OP a lot of old guys just change the or piston at certain hour intervals because of habit, not because they know any better. If you grew up revving 125s and they required pistons at 40 hours, then maybe that’s what you’re comfortable with when you got a fancy new four stroke.

But i think the bigger thing that nobody has mentioned is that you said you specifically value the orange frame and unless he already had it stripped down and powder coated, the 2017 350 will not have that.

As to the 8.5 hour drive (Each way) I’d laugh in his face. Meet halfway at best or no deal.

That's ridiculous, it's a MX bike. Motors get rebuilt all the time. But saying its a "new" motor isn't accurate.
