My dad used to get pissed at me when I raced bmx because I’d be yawning in staging.

Ask stupid questions, get stupid answers.
Rarely have I felt nervous/anxious on a starting gate, but I often feel sleepy.
Once, I was putting on my helmet and my buddy sneaks up behind me and slaps me on the shoulders: "QUIT FUCKING AROUND! GO GET A HOLESHOT!"
He startled me. You either get scared or pissed off when you're startled.
I got pissed off because he interrupted my pre-race relaxed mindset.
Being pissed off got me a holeshot. I was on a 125, in the 30+ class that day.
Anxiety/nervousness can cause abbreviated breaths. Typically, a nominal difference that isn't really noticeable and the body's physiological, instinctual "correction", is to yawn to make up for these lapses in complete oxygenation exchange.
I looked into this long ago because I did it too.
Not a stupid question to anyone who's ever been on a line.

Thus you yawn in the morning when you wake - brain activity increases quickly but the body is still moving out of sleep phase. Then at night when you want to keep your brain focussed on an activity like watching TV but your body is slowing down for bed.
I do it all the time when I’m nervous about something. My nervous state causes my brain activity to spike but my body is still regulating my breathing normally...resulting in a yawn.
