I went to the Trans-USA race at Red Bud in 1979. Very few Euro's there like had been advertised. Also Hannah had broken his leg in the watersking accident and couldn't race. Bummer all the way around. Always heard the Trans-AMA events were good but I was somewhat sorry I drove 5 hrs to watch this race.
Once Hannah won it in 78 and all of our guys showed a lot of improvement the Euro participation started to dwindle.

I drive by the old Orlando track a few times per month. I stopped by the bridge that overlooks the track, and most of it is still un developed.

I think it was 1972. I think I remember Ake Jansen and Heiki Mikola as the two big European racers. If I’m not mistaken, I remember Bengt Ahberg was there as well. Ake won it that year. #27

Seriously, it motivated my next 10 years of my life.

Also, the twins were announcing ?
The 2 smallest twins in Guiness book history.
John and Greg
They were awesome.

I also think HANNAH was there
Might be wrong.

I stil have photos

The Trans AMA raced at Rio Bravo in 1978 or 79 if I recall. I have some great pictures somewhere of Smith, Hannah and Weinert and the Moto X Fox team.

OK back in the 70’s & 80’s there was a fall series that the Europeans would come over and race. Over the years It had 2 names and I cant think of what they were.
International American race series was a precursor to the world famous Trans-Am series, soon to be renamed Trans - USA series I think or TRANS-AMA series... Or visa versa.
At first it was the best against the worst but finished up being the best against the best.

Not one of you old pole-smokers got it right...close, but not right. Oldvintage guy was closest. Inter-am, then Trans-am, then changed to Trans-AMA because the SCCA had the Trans-am rights. The Trans-USA came later and all the rest, just like Oldvintageguy said.

I was at the Saddleback Trans-Am and saw Jim West's crash. Sad day.

I remember going to the mid-ohio Trans-am in 78' or 79'! Drove about 6 hrs in the back of a ford mustang. Remember the crazy people on scaffolds drinking throwing firecrackers on people. Another guy feel out of a tree close to us and just laid there where he landed covered in dirt! Seems like someone had a pet skunk. Wild times.

Do you get cyclenews online? There is a excellent multi page story on Jim West. If I wasn’t a computer illiterate I would post the link for you. Maybe someone else here can do that for you. I was at Saddleback that day too and was one of the lowlights of my life. I always knew MX was dangerous but it never took anyone’s life (that I knew of) until that day

Anyway try n find that story, gives us a update on his girlfriend who travelled the circuit with him and also the outstanding rides he put in leading up to that unfortunate day

Anybody got any more pics of the Placerville track or know its location exactly? Little bit of moto history right there.

See if this opens up, it’s the entire issue and the article is towards the back
Great article. I was 13 racing the mini class when West passed. I was at the memorial race mentioned in the article at Valley Cycle Park. That was our local track and it was like a National that day with all the big names.
