I always know what gear I'm in.

I can normally tell what gear someone else is in as well. Helps me gauge some jumps if I can't speed check someone.

Never knew what gear I was in. Everything based on feel. If you are in the "zone", you are not thinking about anything.

I count in my head which gear I am in when I ride. Each shift up I saw third fourth etc. same with down.

I guess I must suck because I always know what gear I'm in. And sometimes will reset back to 1st and come back up if I lose count if it's important such as coming up to a jump section. I keep track so I know how the bike is going to pull coming up to a jump or through a corner.

Ahh I what am I saying, I KNOW I'm slow

One time my friend asked me what gear I was in while clearing some doubles.

We are no longer friends...

I don’t even remember how many gears my bike has most of the time. Just shift up when I need to go faster and down when I notice I’m not riding in the power or coming into a corner for braking purposes. Never a number like needing to be in 3rd for a jump but I know how the bike needs to feel to hit it.

To me they go hand in hand. I ride by feel and between that and just paying attention to what I'm doing I know what gear I'm in. I don't ride around the track going ok I need to hit this in 4th gear but If I've shifted to 4th in a straight I know coming into the turn to downshift twice.

I always know. It's a good way to be more calculated. e.g. "I know I'm cornering well today because I'm in all the right gears in all the right RPMs" or on the other hand "I'm having trouble doing this turn in my normal gear so maybe I should focus on my exit out of the corner previous, adjust my position, enter quicker and possibly need to clutch more"

I find when I have no idea what gear I'm in, i tend to repeat the same mistakes lap after lap. It's going to sound silly, but if you keep your clutching etc. controlled, being able to ride in a high gear in a high RPM in a high gear, is a great KPI.

Only time I'm not aware is if I'm doing wheelies in the ditch next to the highway...I pop up the front and click gears up until they don't click anymore haha. On the track 2-3rd is where my 450 stays...250f I remember changing gears a lot and not really knowing what gear I was in.

If you're riding a 125 you know what gear you're in. Can't afford not to.

I can't even ride without knowing what gear I'm in. If I lose track, I shift down to 1st in a slow corner and start over.

Usually 3rd-4th with 2nd on tighter corners. But while I'm actually riding, I go off of feel.

Never. I just shift up or down as needed. Pretty sure I am never in 1st on the track. :-)

About the only time I pay attention to what gear I'm in is on the gate.

Amen, even older 250fs. I've at shit by getting tapped out on power 15 feet before take off and coming up short more than a few times. Most notably the 60 ft step down double I had in my backyard that I tried hitting in 2nd gear. Think it's because I had a 50t on he rear tho Huh
