Do you have a tendency to crash on a particular side??

As the title states--- I'm recovering from left shoulder surgery (8 screws, etc) that I needed from dislocating it 3 times in the past 18 mos of racing . As I've been rehabbing, I had been reminiscing about all my major crashes over the years . (I'm 60 now, but raced from 1973-1980 and then took a 35 year hiatus and just started racing again in 2016.) Anyway, I've realized that a disproportionate ( 90%)of my hard crashes occur on my left side. Meaning that's the side I get launched from.
So I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that type of issue and if there has ever been any "study" and if there would be any rational reason for that to happen. I'm right side dominant ,so does that mean that I possibly push off from that side ? Or is it because the throttle is on the right side ? Just seems odd.

My surgeon actually initiated the thought process--while I was waiting for my surgery date to arrive , I had to race 2 more rounds to solidify my 2nd place in the series standings , so when I told my surgeon my plans , he said "sure, go ahead, just make sure you crash on your right side" . And that got me thinking.........

I generally crash the hardest on the side the dirt is on.

Let's say left is 9 o'clock, right is 3. I've predominately been a 12 o'clock crasher.

Yes, I'm ambidextrous.

I noticed most of my bad injuries are on the left- ankle, hip, pelvis, shoulder. My theory is that as a right-hand dominant person, I instinctively land on my left side after flying through the air (again). Smile

Other than my left ACL and ankle, all my injuries are to my right side. ACL twice, humerus, wrist/navicular, collarbone twice, separated shoulder, partially torn rotator cuff. All different get-off's.

Good times.

I was leaning towards that theory as well. Your dominant side possibly tries to protect itself ?

Right side. Always. Never gone down on the left side. Couldnt figure out why for the longest time until my ortho sent me to neuro. At some point in one of my several concussions, i damaged my inner ear on the right side and ever since, my balance has been off and i naturally drift right or fall to the right.

Broken wrist, arm, and collarbone...all left side...3 separate crashes. Was probably still twisting the throttle until the bitter end.

I always smash on my left side no matter what sport. Moto, skateboard, snowboard. All the lingering aches and pains are on my left side. You should make this a poll? "Left Side or Right Side"

Left. Its always left... yes I am right handed.

I think its true most people also feel most comfortable turning left (rear brake access or some other reason). I always figured I was just pushing harder when turning that way hence bigger crash.

Then again I've definitely high-sided turning right and still managed to land left....

Was only thinking about this the other day,
15 different broken bones, and all on right side except for a pinky finger on left hand

Torn meniscus, torn rotator cuff, broken hand required pinning, clavicle, jaw wired, ribs, punctured lung. All on my right side. Broken left ankle more hardware, arthritis, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Reading this, there is definitely a correlation. I am right handed and crash on my left side way more.

Having said that, I prefer left handed corners, strange.

Boy do I have bad luck with my right side. Ankle, shin and fibula, knee, femur, 2 fingers on my hand and my right side ribs. Left - only 1 hand finger a single knee injury.

So this is directed to the guys that have mainly crashed to the "right" side. Are you left handed dominant, by chance?

Arunkfx-- i definitely prefer left handed turns as well...by a big margin. Wondering again if it has any correlation to being right handed dominant.

Interesting stuff. Will it be of any significance or help ? Probably not, but still interesting nonetheless, lol

Same, right turns are way easier for me.

I am ambidextrous, but definitely right hand dominate.

Probably related to protecting my dominant arm , if I am thrown into the air and have a choice in the matter , I always tuck and roll on the left side. No matter what contact sport it happens to be. And lefts are my stronger turns , too bad most tracks around me go clockwise , Saddleback was one of the few counter clockwise tracks back when I was younger. That means I just get way more practice to do my offside turns 😀

9 times out of 10 , i always seem to get more damage done to my left side. Most all my old injuries are on that side , until this past July , where I hit the ground hard and messed my right side. Still feeling the affects of that one.
