*Considering the lack of sports viewing available, currently, especially at these unusual air-times ?

Yep I think the number of races and non standard days/times will bring in new fans but not many. Most folks back to work. SX still a fringe sport that needs some more characters and personality hyping. I took a buddy to a Supercross race a few years ago and he said it was basically dirt bikes going round and round in a circle. That’s what it is without people hyping.

Rup,

I do think this is an amazing opportunity for exposure and will yield positive results. Dirt bikes seem to be selling strong everywhere so this is as optimistic as I have been in a long time about bringing new people into the sport. The little ebikes I believe will be a Godsend for a long term pathway into mx. Call me crazy but I really believe this.

I sure hope it will.

But there should more new tracks. Local dealers together + fast local riders need to leverage themselves and set this up. It is the only way to sell more dirt bikes.

And there should be entry level opportunities. There are very few sports where you need to invest 3k (2k bike + 1k gear) to know if you like it or not. At each track there should be 1 PW, 1 used 230 CRFs and 1 tammed down and used 125 YZs that could be rented at $10 / 15 minutes (+$10 for the gear). And based on the number of tv viewers and people in stadiums, it should be said several times by the presenters that their local track can welcome them to try.

Something that killed the possibilities to enter the sport is also the fact that for instance since a few years in france it is necessary to have a licence, at least for the day ($50/day or $200 per year). Something the karting industry figured it out. In the past you could just let a buddy try your bike (well, a very good buddy, and when the plastics/graphics were already abused). I am sure lots of people entered the sport that way, quite free of charge.

Perhaps if they had managed to get all the remaining races to air on NBC as oppose to NBCSN.

A lot more people have NBC.

Yes and with NBC carrying the 2nd part of Salt Lake 1 and Salt Lake 7, that will no doubt help broadcasts reach more eyeballs.

Down the road, could this(Weekend and Mid-week) schedule happen for Anaheim? Or some of the other venues? Would certainly be a way of getting more rounds in from January to May.

The conundrum..... would you want MX/SX to get as big as NASCAR? Big money ruins good things. Then there are the rabid fans....the ones who start fights because their guy lost or God forbid, the winner is from another country. Think soccer fans....yeah, the ones that riot and would burn down a stadium. I'll pass on our sport getting that big.

Also, it's one sport I can watch where it's not politicized or filled with the "social justice" message of the day bullshit.

It's a family sport. The athletes are mostly people to be proud of and look to as role models. A sport where you can still hear someone get up and thank God.

Yes. I would love it if more racers could make a good living on their dirt bike. No question.

I can’t imagine the privateers out there giving this sport everything they’ve got and then some to make little to no money sitting in the back of their van going “thank god we aren’t mainstream bro. Being broke rules”

Of course it would be nice for people to make a decent living from this. But I would also say, those who are doing it broke are the real thing. They're doing it for the love of the sport. Too much money destroys the integrity of nearly everything.

Funny you say that. I’ve had that same experience with anyone I’ve introduced to the sport over the years. I’ve had friends ask me if I’m going to race next time the SX comes to town....and I just turned 60! I think if you have never ridden a dirt bike you have no idea how difficult it is. The Pros make it look too easy

Yeah I hate it when people discuss major social injustices while I’m trying to watch sports!

Okay Karen.

Something funny I have also heard is "MX is easy, you just have to sit and accelerate, it is not tiring".

Most people don't imagine what it is or what a track with big ruts or a lot of elevation means, not even speaking about jumps.

I even remember having difficulties to walk some tracks with lots of elevation, having to slowly climb the hills like a dog, yet on the bike it was ok Wink I have also some great souvenirs shitting my pants in front of peaky or downhill take offs Wink

Two things to add:

1. You better be careful what you wish for, moto ever got as big as other main stream sports it would be absolutely ruined. Regulation everywhere, even more arm chair expert riders than we have now, and more lawsuits than you could count.

2. If I have to hear or read the word “unprecedented” one more time. . .Pinch

I’ve said this until im blue in the face multiple times. STOP treating your audience like they are 5 years old. People find get interested by learning aspects of things. That’s when they learn how badass moto is. Also, better camera angles to give a bit more of a raw experience and not so 😑

Well, since the morans that run SX decided to go head to head with NASCAR on May 31st instead of keeping a night show to follow them and bring those fans over, I'd say we don't get any kind of a bump from this. Too bad, but SX is just run by folks that aren't that bright.

Well they just had marble racing on TV before a replay of the 2018 Monoco F1 race and I watched that so anything is possible. Sad

So, there's a NASCAR Day race and a Daylight SX on at the same time? Now, NASCAR is pretty bloody boring, but it seems a hell of a lot more people will watch that over SX -- it's throwing away an opportunity to perhaps gather more, sports starved, eyes to SX.

Truly idiotic a scheduling from Feld.

SX is far better at night. And, they'd have a far better chance of it not showing the empty stands, with a darkened perimeter, at night. Plus, Daytime SXs have always looked like crap, and, with viewers seeing empty stands, in what looks like a pretty bloody basic stadium, it sure as hell won't do much for the ambience of it all.

How's the weather likely to be , during the time frame they have set things to run through ? An open top stadium, leaves things a bit risky. I guess it costs a fraction to rent than what a roofed Stadium does.

Well, if you look at the picture from a few steps back, SX/MX may soon be as big/popular as NASCAR. But realize that NASCAR is in such a tailspin/nose dive they are moving towards SX/MX.

Me and my cousin watched that a couple days ago and I swear to god I have never had so much fun watching tv!Laughing

We pretty much just took it upon ourselves to commentate and holy hell did we go off. I was pulling for Balls of Fury while he went for the Green Ducks so it was game on! The outdoor ralley races got extremely intense with a lot of block passing and brake checks, and we even saw the world record broken for the endurance challenge. It was a memorable night in sports that won’t soon be forgotten.

Moto is really thriving during and after this Covid thing. I notice so many more dirtbikes at the tracks and in the back of trucks on the road. New bikes. I think this whole stay inside thing has made people sick of there smartphones, tvs, computers, and want new excitement. Cool

Any sports on tv will bring an audience but it won’t increase bike sales or reignite more racing it more like the only thing on.
