Dirt bike hitting red limiter when I start

Hello, I have a 2002 Honda Cr250r 2T. I'm having a problem when I cold start it sometimes and not all the time. The bike when it starts it just stays at the Rev limiter with out throttle and it goes on for a while and it's scary. The bike does not have over 20 hours on it. I do maintain the air filter and run the correct oil mixture I was told to when I got the bike. It does need to get tuned (too rich) slightly due to weather change. Any solution to my problem anything helps.

idk why you got 2 down votes, but....possible air leak somewhere? I believe people say to spray some carb cleaner or starter fluid around the airbox when you get to idle to see if it changes the rpms. But I'm sure someone else will correct me if I'm off on this. Also, maybe try posting in the tech help sub forum rather than moto related.

You’ve got an air leak. After you get your bike started and hopefully settled down, spray flammable type contact cleaner at the area around your reed cage, base gasket, the carb itself, and take off your ignition cover and spray in there as well. When your idle rises you’ve found your leak. I’d guess it’s the crank seal behind the magneto.

Also, jetting should be richer for winter temps, not leaner. There’s more oxygen in cold air, you need more fuel to balance that.

You know what he meant, no need to be deliberately obtuse.
Help the guy or move along.

Two strokes do indeed have rev limiters just because they don't act the same way as a 4 stroke doesn't mean they don't have them ya tard.

16 year old bike with less than 20 hours. IMO tear the motor down and replace all the seals. None of em have much longer and you have an air leak somewhere.

I fail to see the issue here. It's a Honda so I wouldn't expect it to hit any other color of limiter than red.

Air leak somewhere.

OP, if you can make it to the LA area at all, let me know and we can go riding!

Agree with everyone here. Air leak causing lean condition causing high rev. Fix the leak or that motor can run hot and seize. Happened to me on a carb'd streetbike once at 90mph on an overpass. Luckily the chain snapped and I coasted to a stop but could have been much worse.
